Iberdrola and DXC Complete Landmark Technology Modernization Project Successfully

Successful Completion of Iberdrola's Technology Modernization Project

Iberdrola, a prominent global energy firm based in Bilbao, Spain, in partnership with DXC Technology, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing one of the most extensive technology modernization projects in the Spanish energy sector.

This multi-year undertaking involved the migration of core business systems to the cloud, particularly the Azure platform, thus transforming Iberdrola's operations to thrive in a rapidly evolving energy market. Key aspects of this transformation include automation, enhanced customer service efficiency, and reduced operational costs, all pivotal for maintaining competitive advantage.

Transformation Highlights

The project marked one of the largest IT modernization efforts ever undertaken within the Spanish energy landscape. Specifically, more than 180 terabytes of data and over 30 million lines of code were migrated from an outdated mainframe environment to the cloud. This significant data shift not only enhanced operational agility but also opened doors for the integration of artificial intelligence technologies and services, substantially improving the customer experience.

Sergio Merchán, Iberdrola's Global CIO, emphasized that this modernization was a crucial milestone in the company’s digital strategy. He noted, "The upgrade of our core systems allows us to tackle new business challenges while maintaining our global leadership position. Thanks to DXC, we now have a more modern, efficient, and scalable technology platform that is ready to grow with us."

Enabling Business Continuity

DXC played a key role in this lengthy transformation process with its expertise in automation technologies. This approach ensured that Iberdrola could update and enhance its applications without interrupting daily business operations. The cloud-based platform not only improved efficiency in various processes but also facilitated the seamless adaptation of Iberdrola's model in other countries while ensuring compliance with local regulations – a critical skill in the heavily regulated energy sector.

Alfonso García Muriel, President of DXC Technology for Spain and Portugal, stated, "We successfully modernized the company’s technology, accelerating innovations while maintaining seamless business continuity. Our aim was to make technology a growth engine for Iberdrola, enabling them to become more agile, efficient, and future-ready. By leveraging our customer-focused approach and industry expertise, we have completed this mission."

Commitment to Sustainability

The modernization further reinforces DXC’s commitment to innovation and ecological sustainability. By reducing energy consumption and optimizing resources, the project highlights pivotal goals in the global energy transition. With their extensive IT engineering knowledge and proven track record of implementation, DXC continues to guide global enterprises in modernizing their core systems and infrastructures, ensuring they remain leaders in an increasingly AI-driven world.
