Medline Expands Operational Efficiency with New AutoStore System in Aurora, Colorado

Medline Industries, Inc., a prominent player in the medical supplies sector, has recently launched a state-of-the-art AutoStore installation at its distribution center located in Aurora, Colorado. This advancement, marking Medline’s 24th AutoStore initiative across the nation, is part of the company's strategy to enhance efficiency and meet the rising demand for healthcare supplies in the region.

The new AutoStore system incorporates advanced technology to streamline operations within the distribution center. This automated storage and retrieval solution utilizes cutting-edge robotics and high-density storage techniques, which optimize the fulfillment process, significantly increasing throughput and overall distribution efficiency. Specifically, Medline's latest installation comprises eight induction workstations, ten picking stations, 38,000 storage bins, and a fleet of 96 robots to assist in sorting, retrieving, and transporting items efficiently. With this addition, Medline’s total fleet of robots across its global distribution network exceeds 2,100, showcasing the company's commitment to automation and operational excellence.

Sean Halligan, Medline’s Executive Vice President of Operations, expressed the company's dedication to enhancing supply chain management through continuous investment in technology. He noted, “Medline’s ongoing investment in AutoStore technology exemplifies our relentless pursuit of operational excellence in response to increasing customer demand. By bringing this new system into our Aurora facility, we modernize our network, ensuring critical supplies are quickly and accurately delivered to our customers, while simultaneously facilitating a more streamlined work environment for our team members.”

The significance of the AutoStore system extends beyond mere efficiency. As growth in customer demand accelerates, the new installation will play a crucial role in supporting the already bustling distribution center in Aurora. Angelica Chavez, the director of operations at the facility, highlighted the importance of this investment, stating that it enhances scalability and facilitates better service for their extensive service territory. “This upgrade allows us to handle a far greater parcel volume, enabling both growth and adaptability in tandem with our customers’ needs,” she commented.

At the unveiling event, held on May 15, Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman expressed gratitude towards Medline for their commitment to investing in the city and for the vital contributions they make to the healthcare system.

The AutoStore system deployed in Aurora utilizes Swisslog’s SynQ software, designed to unify and simplify warehousing operations, including intake, fulfillment, and inventory management. Robert Humphry, Vice President of Sales at Swisslog, conveyed pride in collaborating with Medline on this project, which furthers their long-standing partnership spanning over a decade. “Together, we have implemented automation solutions that deliver fast and reliable operations, and this latest project marks another significant step towards enabling Medline to meet the growing demand efficiently while fostering an engaging work environment for employees,” he added.
