Sanya Set to Host Opening Round of Formula E 2027 Asian Season

Sanya, the tropical coastal city of China, has officially secured its place as the opening venue for the Asian leg of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship for the 2027 season. This exciting development follows a highly successful race on Sanya's beaches and is marked by a record-setting calendar for the series. Scheduled for April 17, 2027, this event will kick off the much-anticipated Asian segment of the racing season and will also celebrate the first Formula E race in China featuring the new GEN4 cars.

The 2027 Formula E season is set to be the most extensive in the championship's history, comprising 21 races across 13 cities worldwide. Sanya provides a unique coastal urban circuit designed to challenge drivers while showcasing the picturesque scenery of the region. The electric racing series continues to gain global attention and popularity, and Sanya's involvement only underscores its rising status as a premier destination for high-profile events.

Alberto Longo, co-founder and director of Formula E, stated, “Sanya is a track that pushes drivers to their limits. To bring GEN4 here at the start of the season is a conscious decision.” This race will signify the beginning of the seventh year since Formula E first returned to Sanya, and it is projected to attract millions of viewers worldwide, with live broadcasts reaching 195 countries.

In addition to hosting Formula E, Sanya has actively worked on establishing itself as a global events hub. Recent data from the Hainan Free Trade Port indicated that in the first six months since the commencement of new customs operations, over 1.6 million cross-border travelers were recorded, reflecting a 31.2% increase compared to the previous year. The city has already successfully hosted various events, including the 6th Asian Beach Games and the Hainan Island International Film Festival. Furthermore, future plans include the final for the HYROX World Fitness Championship.

Sanya’s event strategy is built upon three structural strengths:
1. Visa Policies: Hainan boasts a visa exemption regime for nationals from 86 countries and maintains open sky policies enabling direct flights to 28 international destinations.
2. International Tourism Promotion: The city operates 23 liaison offices for promoting international tourism in over ten countries, facilitating direct cooperation with global event rights holders and professional organizers.
3. Comprehensive Event Services: Sanya offers a detailed approval process for cultural and sports events, supported by a professional management mechanism that simplifies complex bureaucratic procedures for both national and international event organizers.

These systemic advantages, combined with a robust support infrastructure and a booming cross-border tourism market, have allowed Sanya to undergo a transformative change. Once an occasional host for events, it is now sought after by international organizers wanting to showcase their events in this vibrant city.

A representative from the Sanya Municipal People's Government remarked, “We are building a platform that can continuously host world-class events, and we warmly welcome international organizers and visitors to experience the unique charm of our livable, attractive, and business-friendly city.”

By hosting prestigious events and continually enhancing its infrastructure and visitor services, Sanya firmly establishes itself as a leading destination for global events, greatly contributing to its local economy and international profile. With the Formula E race on the horizon, the city looks forward to welcoming fans and participants from around the world, emphasizing its growing significance in the world of sports and tourism.
