A Breakthrough in Sewage Inspection Technology
In a bid to enhance the safety and efficiency of sewage infrastructure inspections, Liberaware Co., headquartered in Chiba, Japan, and Nippon Hume Co. from Tokyo have conducted a groundbreaking public experiment at the Nippon Hume Kumagaya Factory. This experiment showcases a new method for inspecting and diagnosing sewage pipelines using advanced drone technology.
The Experiment
The recent trial took place in a controlled environment designed to replicate a sewage pipeline system. During the experiment, a small drone with a diameter of approximately 20 cm was deployed to directly apply and spray diagnostic agents onto the inner walls of the pipes. Two different drone models were utilized, each designed for specific tasks: one for applying a liquid agent ('spray type') and the other for wide-area diffusion from a nozzle ('application type').
This initiative marks a significant evolution from traditional inspection methods, which largely relied on passive techniques like camera imaging. Instead, the drones sprayed a pH indicator that changes color to detect alterations in concrete structures, introducing an active inspection method that can quickly identify issues without the need for manual access to confined spaces.
The Vision for the Future
Liberaware aims to harness the agility of the world's smallest drones to address diverse inspection requirements beyond mere imaging. The company's approach is rooted in its mission to create a safer society by innovating in difficult-to-access areas such as narrow, dark, and hazardous indoor spaces. Their unique infrastructure inspection solutions leverage aerial technology to collect and analyze data that helps maintain public safety.
With their dedication to making invisible risks visible, Liberaware is committed to pushing the boundaries of drone technology and its applications in infrastructure maintenance and management. As they look ahead, the potential for these drones in various environments will continue to be explored, paving the way for safer public utilities and more efficient maintenance strategies.
