As the financial planning industry searches for the next generation of talent, insights from Amplified Planning reveal an encouraging trend: a significant surge of interest among individuals keen on pursuing careers in this field. The latest data showcases that when offered authentic experiences, potential financial planners exhibit a strong desire to delve into the profession.

In its seventh annual Externship, Amplified Planning recorded the highest enrollment in its history: 2,825 participants, a noteworthy increase of 36% from 2025. This jump comes alongside an impressive completion rate of 74.79%, a rise from 66.6% in previous years, indicating a solid commitment to the program and the profession itself.

Impact of the Externship

The 2026 Externship served not only as an educational platform but also as a transformative experience for many participants. A remarkable 81.8% of all individuals involved expressed heightened commitment towards a career in financial planning after joining the program. Hannah Moore, the founder of Amplified Planning, stated, "The numbers tell us something important about the future of this profession."

This year’s Extursion provided the most in-depth analysis yet about individuals exploring financial planning careers. The asset revealed an astonishingly diverse pipeline: nearly 40% of participants identified as non-white or multiracial, while almost 42% of the enrolled were women—significantly higher than the national average of 23.8% of female CFP (Certified Financial Planner) professionals.

Career changers represented a notable segment, with 28% transitioning from various fields like technology, healthcare, and journalism, underscoring the untapped potential within unconventional backgrounds. College students also made up a large portion, with approximately 700 participating this year, marking it as the largest group thus far.

Unique Learning Experience

What sets the Externship apart from traditional academic learning is its hands-on approach. Participants engage with actual client meetings, observe seasoned financial planners, and interact with industry experts. This real-world exposure is crucial as they learn to navigate the technology and tools that advisors utilize daily. Enhancements in the 2026 program included collaborations with technological partners such as Holistiplan and Nitrogen, alongside established partners like eMoney and Redtail.

In an innovative expansion, Amplified Planning also partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to pilot the Externship for high school students aged 15 to 18. This initiative aims to introduce young individuals to financial services careers early on, helping them envisage potential future roles in the field. Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, who helped introduce the program, emphasized the importance of empowering young talent to consider careers in financial services.

Many participants voiced frustrations regarding the difficulty in finding employers who appreciate transferable skills from non-traditional backgrounds. This indicates a need for advisory firms to rethink hiring practices to attract a wider pool of talent. Moore addressed this gap by suggesting that the real challenge lies in firms' hiring policies and their willingness to adapt.
