Moshimo FES 2025: Enhancing Quality of Life during Disasters
The Moshimo FES Shibuya 2025, a collaborative effort by three organizations—Shibuya Tourism Association, Shibuya Future Design Association, and Kokumin Kyosai Coop—took place on August 30 and 31 at Yoyogi Park. This unique event aimed to elevate Quality of Life (QOL) during disasters, gathering around 16,000 attendees and featuring 101 exhibitors over its two-day program.
The inaugural ceremony commenced on August 30 at 10 AM, featuring speeches from key figures such as Shibuya Mayor Ken Hasebe, Jungo Kanayama of the Shibuya Tourism Association, and Takahiro Sakamoto from Kokumin Kyosai Coop. They emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness, particularly addressing challenges for individuals unable to return home during emergencies.
The central theme of this year's festival was to communicate the realities of living during disasters and propose innovative ways to prepare for such situations. Attendees explored various exhibitions that showcased updated shelter amenities including toilets, kitchens, and beds. Exhibits featured a hydrogen-powered electric assist bicycle, disaster tents designed for heat stress relief, and a range of food options.
During the festival, 15 different stage activities ensured that visitors of all ages, including families, international tourists, and local students, engaged in learning about disaster readiness while having fun. Children were particularly captivated by the display of a remarkable 40-meter fire truck, the largest of its kind, which drew enthusiastic comments from visitors. Families had the chance to experience riding in a fire service basket, with one noting the educational aspect of understanding how such vehicles can assist during emergencies.
A corner run by Nagoya TV's Hapi Camp highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness and camping gear. Families enjoyed workshops that showcased the use of solar panels, tents, and sleeping bags in disaster situations. One child shared, “This tent was a bit hot compared to home, but with water and food, I feel we could manage,” reflecting a vital understanding developed through hands-on experience.
The festival also emphasized essential skills through its cooking demonstration section where participants had the opportunity to use Tiger’s magical rice cooker, capable of functioning without electricity. The delightful aroma of freshly cooked rice attracted many, with attendees discovering the convenience of cooking without power—a crucial skill in potential crises.
In addition, a large exhibition of disaster toilets displayed various models designed to cater to all needs, from diaper-changing facilities to wheelchair-accessible options. Attendees were encouraged to explore and compare these innovative solutions to better prepare for potential situations.
The event’s “Disaster Update Plaza” featured cutting-edge disaster knowledge accessible to all visitors. Participants experienced firsthand demonstrations of portable toilets and emergency water purification systems. The highlight was a demonstration of a hydrogen-powered electric bike, capable of traveling up to 50 km, which showcased its potential use for emergency transport in disaster situations.
Engagement went beyond traditional informational booths. The Kokumin Kyosai booth drew crowds eager to participate in a disaster preparedness quiz, providing a fun and interactive way to learn. Families noted that the quizzes sparked insightful discussions about disaster preparedness that both adults and children could learn from.
The festival also introduced a unique initiative: the “Disaster Item Utilization Project,” which aimed to turn the anxiety of disasters into proactive solutions. Participants voted for various essential items and proposed a project focused on improving life quality during emergencies. Attendees could sample innovative foods designed for disaster conditions, emphasizing the importance of stocking useful supplies throughout the year.
Moreover, the event also addressed the significant concern of evacuating with pets, featuring a seminar led by a well-known singer and ambassador for the
