Annual Food Drive to Combat Hunger
On May 10, communities across the United States will come together for the annual
Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC). This initiative, kickstarted in 1993, holds the title of America's largest one-day food drive, mobilizing resources and volunteers to assist those in need.
Every year, on the second Saturday of May, letter carriers invite residents to contribute non-perishable food items which are to be left in bags by their mailboxes prior to their daily mail delivery. This straightforward process makes it easy for individuals to contribute to this essential cause. After collection, a network of thousands of dedicated volunteers distribute the collected goods to local food pantries, ensuring that all donations directly benefit the community where they were collected.
Quote from NALC President
Brian L. Renfroe, the president of NALC, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, "Letter carriers see every day the struggles that people in their communities face. For more than three decades, we've helped to meet their needs, and we are proud to do so again."
This year, the timing of the food drive is particularly crucial. As spring arrives, food pantries are often running low following the winter holiday donations, and with school lunch programs wrapping up for the summer, many families find themselves in precarious situations regarding food security. This drive aims to alleviate some of that burden, serving as a reminder of the community spirit necessary to combat hunger.
The Urgent Need
Disturbingly, nearly one in five Americans—including millions of children, veterans, and the elderly—struggle with food insecurity. Events like the Stamp Out Hunger drive aim to bridge this gap by bringing crucial resources to those who might otherwise go without.
Community Engagement and Support
The success of this initiative relies heavily on a wide array of partners who assist in various ways. The U.S. Postal Service plays a critical role, coordinating logistics and ensuring that mail carriers can collect donations efficiently. Other key partners include the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association, RR Donnelley, United Way Worldwide, the AFL-CIO, Valpak, Kellanova, and CVS Health. These organizations provide funding for promotional materials, contribute food donations, and volunteer their time to help spread the word.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in this meaningful cause. For those who wish to contribute, simply leave non-perishable food items in a bag near your mailbox on May 10, and your local letter carrier will collect them during the usual mail delivery. Each donation, no matter how small, can make a notable difference in the fight against hunger in our communities.
