After a decade of impressive growth and operational adjustments across more than 20 company-owned outlets, The Melt, the San Francisco-based fast-casual chain famous for its MeltBurger, has embarked on a national franchising initiative.

On April 2, 2026, The Melt formally opened its doors to franchising, inviting seasoned operators to participate in the next chapter of its development. This strategic move follows a period of strong financial performance. In 2025, the company reported a remarkable $58.3 million in revenue, underscoring the brand's solid foundation. Locations operational for a full year recorded an average of $3.4 million in annual sales, with the most successful outlets exceeding $4.5 million.

CEO Ralph Bower articulated the brand's philosophy, stating, “To be an outstanding restaurant company, we need to run exceptional restaurants.” He emphasized the value of hands-on experience in managing every aspect of the business prior to franchising, allowing the company to make informed decisions regarding operational costs, labor, and guest interactions.

Greg Vojnovic, the Head of Franchising, highlighted the brand's measured approach to expanding through franchising. He stated, “Our five-year company plan focuses on aggressive growth in California and Arizona, where we see significant opportunities. This strategy will enable us to spread our wings and reach beyond our primary regions with top-notch operators who share our vision.”

The Melt's controlled entry into the franchise market involves carefully selecting highly qualified operators who can lay a strong foundation for the brand's growth. Vojnovic remarked that the focus would be on attracting experienced multi-unit operators who have a track record of success in their own right.

Unlike many emerging restaurant brands that choose to franchise right out of the gate, The Melt spent 15 years refining its operational blueprint. Presently, it operates over 20 locations, primarily within California, with expansion into Arizona as well.

The Melt's menu prominently features its iconic MeltBurger, crafted with a unique blend of 100% all-natural Angus and Wagyu beef topped with aged cheddar, ensuring an irresistible melting experience. Alongside the burgers, the menu boasts a variety of offerings such as grilled melts, crispy chicken, creamy mac and cheese, fries, and thick shakes, all centered around natural ingredients.

Efficiency in operations is a core focus, as the designing of kitchens centers on a compact yet effective approach. The restaurants are operated with minimal equipment while maximizing sales, often in spaces measuring between 1,900 to 2,300 square feet.

Vojnovic elaborated on the design simplicity, stating, “There’s no over-engineering involved. Our model consists of efficient appliances and smart preparation techniques, designed for profitability.”

With franchising now underway, The Melt emphasizes the importance of partnering with seasoned operators for its first few franchisees.
