World Art Toy Fans Rejoice: Kazumitsu Akamatsu's 'Destroy All Monsters 14' Exhibition
This summer, art toy enthusiasts from around the globe are eagerly anticipating the exhibition titled '
Kaiju Lab Exhibition - Kazumitsu Akamatsu's “DESTROY ALL MONSTERS 14”', which will be running from
August 9 to August 31, 2023, at the
SOMSOC GALLERY in Tokyo. Managed by Ken Yineri, this cutting-edge gallery cum creative unit is known for hosting remarkable artist showcases, and Akamatsu's solo event takes center stage this month.
Kazumitsu Akamatsu, a master in the SOFUBI (soft vinyl) sphere, attracts a dedicated following with his original series of kaiju (monsters). The current exhibition will feature over
150 unique SOFUBI creations, focusing primarily on the beloved '
SKULL HEAD BUTT' series. Attendees will gain insight into the history of kaiju and SOFUBI through exclusive interviews and sketches display.
In addition, the exhibition promises collaboration pieces including the
“Electric Eye” version of the
SKULL HEAD BUTT series created together with represented artist,
Seidenba Sakuto. Expect works born from partnerships with other renowned artists to also be displayed prominently.

For those eager to take home a piece from this extraordinary collection, a special sales event will take place from
August 23 to 24, where fans can purchase select SOFUBI creations designed by Akamatsu himself. These items can be picked up at the gallery on
August 31, which marks the end of the exhibition.

Kaiju Approaches' at
7 PM. Guests will be greeted by the presence of Kazumitsu Akamatsu himself, alongside famous wrestler and musician
Ikko Yaguchi, who will help kick off the exhilarating event. Well-known DJ
Miles Woodroffe will also be spinning at this lively celebration.
Throughout the exhibition, exciting collaborations with kaiju pro wrestling will enliven the gallery, featuring displays of Akamatsu's wrestling monster shells and surprise appearances from professional kaiju wrestlers that promise to engage visitors further. Meet Kazumitsu Akamatsu
Kazumitsu Akamatsu, known for being not only a SOFUBI creator but also a novelist, established
Marmit in 1996 and has since created over 2,000 iconic items. He was influenced by design greats like
Toru Narita, having worked on memorable projects such as
Ultraman and
Alien during his career. Since his first exhibition in New York in 2019, Akamatsu's works have gained traction in various global art scenes, including Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Hollywood.
