Fujimino City Council Collaborates with Bunkyo Gakuin University for Community Engagement

Community Engagement: Bunkyo Gakuin University and Fujimino City Council Collaboration

On June 24, 2026, Bunkyo Gakuin University (President: Tsutomu Fukui) will host a community exchange event with the Fujimino City Council, specifically the Citizens and Urban Committee. This event, which includes a council report meeting and a discussion session, is part of the collaborative agreement established between the university and the city council in May 2021.

The main aims of this partnership include the exchange and development of talent, mutual utilization of university and council libraries, and support for policy formation within the city council. Since the inception of this agreement, both parties have continuously engaged in practical exchanges, utilizing each other's resources and knowledge. Examples of such activities include lectures by university faculty on community welfare and the city council's use of the university library.

This year's theme for the exchange event focuses on 'Vacant Storefront Measures,' reflecting a pressing local issue. The event will be held at the Fujimino City Council Hall to provide an authentic setting that connects students with real council activities.

Addressing the Issue of Vacant Storefronts

The problem of vacant stores in shopping districts has become a serious issue nationwide due to various factors such as an aging population, lack of successors, and economic downturns. The ability of shopping streets to maintain multiple functions, like creating community vibrancy and ensuring public safety, is critical for a rich urban life.

In this event, students from Bunkyo Gakuin University who are actively involved in revitalization activities, such as participating in 'Kashiya Bunbun' (a community initiative), will join. The objective is to deepen the students' understanding of social issues and politics within a real council setting, while also sharing their perspectives and opinions as representatives of the younger generation with the council.

Comments from Fujimino City Council (Citizens and Urban Committee)

Previous Outcomes and Theme Selection

In the past, receiving honest feedback from students with volunteer experiences in after-school programs allowed us to identify challenges from various viewpoints, which were then reflected in city governance. The chosen theme of 'Vacant Storefront Measures' is crucial for sustaining the role of shopping districts amid a declining birthrate and aging society. We are hopeful for active discussions with students who are participating in these initiatives.

Expectations for Students

Interacting with future leaders like students presents a valuable opportunity for both sides. We anticipate that interactions with council members will enhance their understanding of social issues, politics, and local governance. We are committed to listening attentively to their thoughts on public administration and striving to reflect their perspectives in our policies.
