Envision Energy and Sasol Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Projects in South Africa

Envision Energy and Sasol Embark on Green Hydrogen Initiative

Envision Energy, a leading global provider of green technologies, has recently announced a collaboration with Sasol, a prominent player in the global energy and chemicals sector. This partnership is aimed at advancing a design study for a potential green hydrogen production facility at the Sasol site in Sasolburg, South Africa. This collaboration marks a significant leap forward in exploring how future energy systems can integrate renewable energy technologies, energy storage, and electrolyzers to facilitate the development of low-carbon fuels and chemicals, with a keen focus on applications such as e-methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF).

The cooperation was notably highlighted during a visit from South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, to the Chifeng Hydrogen Net Zero Industrial Park operated by Envision in Inner Mongolia. This engagement underlines the growing importance of international collaborative efforts in tackling the global energy crisis through innovative technology solutions.

Utilizing Envision’s expertise in renewable energy, battery energy storage systems, and artificial intelligence-driven energy management, the concept study aims to assess how renewable electricity generation, energy storage, and electrolysis systems can be integrated effectively. This integration will be evaluated under considerations of energy availability, market conditions, and operational requirements to optimize green hydrogen production.

The completion of this concept study is expected later this year, providing both technical and economic insights to support future investment decisions. Sasol is currently exploring ways to leverage its existing industrial capabilities and infrastructure, while simultaneously investigating technologies that could facilitate the energy transition and capitalize on future market opportunities.

“Green hydrogen will play a pivotal role in redefining hard-to-decarbonize industries and creating new pathways for sustainable growth,” stated Kane Xu, Senior Vice President and President of the International Product Line at Envision Energy. He emphasized that through AI-driven energy infrastructure and innovative technologies in renewable energy, storage, and green hydrogen, Envision aims to work alongside global partners like Sasol to develop pioneering energy systems that are limitless, intelligent, and cost-effective, thereby accelerating industrial transformation and creating new opportunities for industries and communities worldwide.

Danie Cronje, Senior Vice President for Business Building at Sasol, remarked, “The concept study with Envision is a significant step toward evaluating how integrated technologies from renewable energy, energy storage, and electrolyzers can assist in the cost-effective production of green hydrogen in Sasolburg. By drawing on world-leading expertise, we can assess how these technologies contribute to future low-carbon value chains for fuels and chemicals while building on Sasol's existing industrial competencies.”

In conclusion, the partnership between Envision Energy and Sasol is positioned to significantly impact the green energy landscape, particularly in South Africa, where there is a growing push for sustainable energy solutions. As both companies continue to develop innovative approaches to energy production, their collaboration promises to pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future in the energy sector.
