Sinopec Releases Groundbreaking Sustainability Report in Algeria for Enhanced Cooperation

On December 27, 2024, the China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, known as Sinopec, unveiled its inaugural sustainability report at a press conference in Algiers, Algeria. This milestone document outlines Sinopec's contributions to economic development while adhering to environmental and social responsibilities under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. As the first of its kind published by a Chinese company in Algeria, this report reflects Sinopec's commitment to fostering a sustainable cooperative model in the region.

Algeria, the largest country in Africa and the fourth-largest economy in the continent, has been a strategic partner for Sinopec, which is eager to reinforce its operational footprint in the country. Sinopec is heavily engaged in sectors such as oil exploration and development, oil engineering, refining, and chemical engineering. One of the pivotal agreements recently signed was with SONATRACH, Algeria's national oil and gas company, concerning the Zarzaitine oil field, which underscores the deepening partnership between the two companies.

Sinopec has put great emphasis on ensuring high engineering standards and delivering superior service quality. A notable project is the desert pipeline construction, which resolved water scarcity issues affecting 50,000 residents in Tamanrasset. The project was recognized for its outstanding contribution to Sino-Algerian cooperation and has been lauded in local and international circles.

The company takes compliance with local safety and environmental regulations seriously, striving for continual improvement in safety management, enhancing environmental controls, and prioritizing ecological construction. Notably, Sinopec has established a safety committee at the Zarzaitine oil field, successfully conducting 42 Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) inspections and investing 3.12 million USD in safety and environmental protection measures.

Community support is also a key aspect of Sinopec's operations in Algeria. The company has created nearly 1,000 local jobs at the Zarzaitine field, with a focus on professional development and career growth. Sinopec's commitment extends beyond employment; it actively engages in various public welfare initiatives including tree planting, waste cleanup activities, and cultural exchanges aimed at enriching local culture.

In one of its noteworthy initiatives, Sinopec launched the 'China Bookshelf,' a project designed to promote cultural exchange. The company has also made substantial medical donations to local hospitals and provided educational supplies to local students, demonstrating a strong dedication to giving back to the community.

Following the publication of this sustainability report, Sinopec aims to further solidify its role as a responsible corporate entity in Algeria. The company's approach highlights its focus on an integrated model that balances oil and gas exploration with environmental stewardship and social progress. This commitment to local engagement and sustainability not only reinforces Sinopec's business objectives but also contributes to Algeria's vision for a sustainable future.

As Sinopec continues to invest in Algeria, it is well-positioned to lead by example in promoting sustainable practices that benefit both its operations and the communities it serves, paving the way for a lasting and mutually beneficial relationship in the region.
