Feeding Hope: The Twin Cities Unites for Pack at the Park's 10th Anniversary
The beloved event, Pack at the Park, is back for its 10th year, inviting volunteers from the Twin Cities to gather at Target Field on June 10-11. The ambitious goal is to pack a staggering 1 million meals for children facing hunger around the globe. Over the last decade, the Twin Cities community has transformed Target Field into a bustling meal-packing site, and now it's time to come together once more.
Barb Shimshock, the Vice President of Development at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "For a child facing hunger, a single meal can change everything." This year, FMSC aims to recruit 3,000 local volunteers, who can help wrangle compassion into tangible meals for those in need. Without volunteer participation, reaching this vital goal will be impossible.
The event’s success hinges on community involvement, sourcing volunteers right from the neighborhoods where 60% of the workforce in these areas often engages in service. With the Twin Cities ranked among the top U.S. metro areas for volunteerism, the calling has gone out to families, friends, and coworkers to step up.
As this milestone celebration approaches, Pack at the Park has grown to be one of FMSC's largest initiatives. To date, local volunteers have packed over 6.3 million meals. This year, a portion of the stadium will be converted into a high-energy workspace, where thousands will join forces around long tables full of ingredients. The meals prepared will utilize FMSC's MannaPack® formula, specially designed by nutrition experts to reach children grappling with hunger in countries such as Sudan, Haiti, and regions in the Middle East. Each meal is packed with essential nutrients to support growth and development while providing critical stability that facilitates access to education.
For two days, instead of a baseball match, the focus will be on a shared commitment to life-changing impact, as thousands of local residents assemble alongside one another. Every volunteer—regardless of age or ability—will find a role in this collaborative environment, where both individual efforts and collective action shape the success of reaching the 1 million meal goal.
The Twin Cities have long been recognized for their generosity and spirit of giving, consistently ranking government support high in national statistics regarding charitable contributions. Such acts of kindness are evident during events like Pack at the Park, where community members roll up their sleeves, harnessing a sense of neighborly love to the global stage—advancing a mission focused on alleviating hunger.
"This is neighbors helping neighbors on a global scale," Shimshock remarked, reiterating how each contribution—from one table to one volunteer—plays a crucial role in changing lives. This year’s Pack at the Park builds on FMSC's staggering milestone of 5 billion meals shipped worldwide, showcasing the significant impact that can be made right from within the community.
Volunteers interested in joining should sign up individually or as a group. Contributions towards the meal packing goal can also be made at fmsc.org/packatthepark. Together, the Twin Cities can continue to be a beacon of hope, demonstrating solidarity in the fight against hunger on this grand milestone event.
