Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Receives Energy Conservation Award for Innovation

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Recognized for Energy Efficiency

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, through its subsidiary Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, recently received the Encouragement Award at the 42nd Energy Conservation Equipment Awards hosted by the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association. This recognition marks the fifth consecutive year of accolades, highlighting the company’s dedication to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The award was given for the introduction of the C-puzzle80, a cutting-edge CO2 refrigerant-based condensing unit, designed specifically for enhancing energy efficiency in aging cold storage facilities. The innovative features of the C-puzzle80 have made it an exemplary solution in the cold chain logistics sector, significantly reducing emissions of CO2 amidst ongoing operations.

The purpose of these awards is to gather and recognize excellent examples of energy-saving technologies that contribute to broader efforts in promoting energy efficiency and environmental conservation within the industry. The C-puzzle80’s release highlights Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' commitment to these goals.

The cold storage facility recognized for this award is owned by Kanefuji Cold Storage Co., a company that has been operational for around thirty years now. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries analyzed the facility's existing equipment to propose an upgrade with the C-puzzle80 aimed at maximizing energy efficiency while simultaneously maintaining operational continuity. As a result of these upgrades, the facility reported a remarkable reduction of 11.3% in electricity consumption and a yearly CO2 emissions decrease of 31.95 tons.

C-puzzle80: A Step Towards Carbon Neutrality

The introduction of the C-puzzle80 not only signifies an upgrade but represents a strategic move towards energy conservation in a facility where prior usage levels of power were already optimized. The new unit's design allows for enhanced operation in cold climates, leveraging lower outdoor temperatures to promote efficient energy use.

In terms of cost reduction, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries undertook substantial analysis of operational conditions to calculate the necessary cooling capacity. This approach led to a decrease in the number of installed refrigerators and coolers, effectively minimizing running costs while maintaining the integrity of stored goods. The modifications ensured that the stored products did not lose volume or weight due to drying from cold air exposure.

Another leap in innovation is the implementation of new control strategies, combining traditional demand management with advanced power leveling controls. This smart integration allows for automatic adjustments in the operational numbers of cooling units, minimizing wear and tear while preventing inefficient cycles of operation, thereby fostering a reliable and energy-efficient environment.

The C-puzzle series ranges from 10 to 80 horsepower, supporting operation under various external temperature conditions, specifically between -15°C and +43°C. Its versatility extends beyond mere refrigeration, making it suitable for diverse cooling needs. Moreover, due to compliance with safety regulations, no extensive manufacturing notification is required, simplifying the installation process for new users.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is committed to achieving a sustainable future and advancing towards a carbon-neutral society. The company continues to engage diligently with customer needs, focusing on the development and implementation of innovative energy-saving technologies.
