Ellucian Foundation Allocates Over $600,000 to Support Global Student Success through PATH Scholarships

The Ellucian Foundation has recently made a significant contribution to higher education by distributing over $600,000 in scholarships aimed at supporting students in financial need. This initiative, known as the Progress, Accomplishment, Thriving, Hope (PATH) Scholarship, targets institutions globally to provide much-needed aid to students facing various economic challenges.

The PATH Scholarship program, established in 2020, serves as a pivotal mechanism to empower students by alleviating the financial burdens that often impede their academic journeys. The 2024 cohort includes 47 selected colleges and universities from the United States, Australia, Canada, Colombia, and Ireland – an outreach that exemplifies the Foundation's commitment to fostering student equity and success. As Laura Ipsen, President and CEO of Ellucian, articulated, financial stress remains a significant hurdle for many students. According to recent data from the Student Voice Report, approximately 59% of students contemplated dropping out due to financial pressures, underscoring the urgent need for programs like PATH to ensure that student retention and mental well-being remain priorities.

The scholarships awarded via PATH come in the form of block grants, ranging from $10,000 to $25,000, which institutions can utilize for various student expenses including housing, tuition, and food. Individual students can receive a maximum grant of $1,500, aimed at assisting them in overcoming the immediate financial barriers to their education. This financial assistance is particularly crucial for first-generation and low-income undergraduates who are often the most vulnerable to educational interruptions caused by financial strain.

Kimberly B. Gentry, Associate Vice Chancellor at the University of Massachusetts Boston, emphasized the importance of the Ellucian Foundation’s support, stating that it plays a vital role in helping at-risk students persist in their degree pursuits. By directly addressing fundamental needs that can disrupt educational progress, the PATH Scholarship aligns with university objectives to enhance student success rates.

Jennifer Welding, Executive Director of the Ellucian Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm for continuing this crucial support, affirming that equitable educational opportunities are essential for all students, irrespective of their socioeconomic status. The program not only alleviates financial distress but ultimately contributes to enriched learning experiences and improved academic outcomes for students across diverse backgrounds.

Kirsten Weeks, Senior Director, Strategic Operations and ESG at Ellucian, added that financial barriers should never deter students from achieving their goals. The PATH Scholarship represents a vital resource that empowers educational institutions to deliver immediate support to those most in need, further reinforcing the culture of resilience and accountability within educational frameworks.

This year, the PATH cohort comprises 36 U.S. institutions alongside 11 additional establishments from Australia, Canada, Colombia, and Ireland. Notable recipients in the United States include California State University-Bakersfield, Eastern Illinois University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. The selection process was overseen by an independent judging committee to ensure transparency and integrity in awarding the grants.

In terms of eligibility, U.S. four-year public institutions participating in the Federal Title IV Student Aid programs were invited to apply, while Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) received strong encouragement to engage in the process. Moreover, non-profit higher educational institutions from 10 countries, including Australia, Canada, Colombia, and the United Kingdom, were also considered for these scholarships.

With more than $2.9 million distributed through the PATH Scholarship program to date, it has positively impacted over 2,650 students, enhancing their educational journeys and encouraging them to thrive in higher education environments.
