Ezurio Unveils EZ BSP for Enhanced Security and Longevity in System-On-Modules

In a move set to redefine the security standards of system-on-modules (SOMs), Ezurio has launched the EZ BSP—an innovative board support package that integrates built-in security features with long-term software support. This advanced offering is now available for Ezurio's range of wireless modules and SOMs, with a promise to streamline manufacturing processes while adhering to the latest regulatory requirements.

Ezurio, recognized globally for its pioneering work in wireless module technologies, has made significant strides by introducing the EZ BSP, which stands for Embedded Board Support Package. This new package is not merely an update; it’s a comprehensive solution that addresses gaps often found in conventional silicon-vendor BSPs. While many vendor BSPs typically focus on hardware support, the EZ BSP builds on a robust open-source Linux foundation and embeds device security and support mechanisms right from the start.

The EZ BSP comes equipped with several key features that set it apart in the crowded marketplace. One of the standout attributes is the Chain of Trust secure boot mechanism. This ensures that every device using the EZ BSP can boot securely, leveraging a hardware root of trust along with signed bootloaders and kernels. Security in this context is paramount: production-grade image signing backed by AWS Key Management Service means that private keys never leave a secure management environment, adding an extra layer of protection.

Ezurio also emphasizes the need for continuous updates in the era of stringent regulations, such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act. Device makers are now mandated to provide extensive documentation regarding vulnerability handling and to offer security updates for devices that may remain in the field for up to fifteen years. Therefore, the EZ BSP facilitates the management of vulnerabilities over time, supporting multi-year lifecycle updates and secure boot processes, placing manufacturers in a favorable position to meet compliance regulations.

Not only does the EZ BSP enable secure boot operations, but it also involves a focus on seamless manufacturing. Ezurio has optimized the manufacturing process, enabling clients to deploy hundreds of thousands of securely programmed SOMs each year without the complexities often associated with proprietary tooling or rigid cloud services. This makes the EZ BSP a compelling choice for manufacturers looking to scale their production while ensuring security.

The software package incorporates Device-side Over-the-Air (OTA) updates powered by popular open-source solutions, such as SWUpdate, which makes it adaptable and compatible with various cloud platforms, including AWS IoT and Azure Device Update.

"Every device shipping today has to be updatable and defensible for years after it leaves the factory, and EZ BSP takes that complexity out of the equation," noted Dan Kephart, Senior Product Manager at Ezurio. He aptly highlighted the importance of mixing security with usability, emphasizing how the EZ BSP transforms secure product shipping from an afterthought into a primary design feature.

Currently, the EZ BSP is available for Ezurio's Nitrogen SMARC and OSM SOM families, specifically utilizing NXP's i.MX technology, along with the Carbon OSM SOMs built on TI's AM Sitara. Plans are also in place to roll out the BSP on the forthcoming Tungsten SMARC SOMs, which will incorporate MediaTek technology, thereby expanding its applicability across different platforms and use cases.

As developments in IoT and wireless connectivity continue to evolve, the innovative steps taken by Ezurio through the launch of EZ BSP not only set a new standard in the industry but also signal a thoughtful approach toward long-term product viability and security—a necessity in today's technology landscape.
