Michter's Launches Bomberger's PFG Kentucky Straight Bourbon
In 2025, Michter's Distillery heralds a new chapter in its Legacy Series by introducing the Bomberger's PFG™ (Precision Fine Grain) Kentucky Straight Bourbon. This release symbolizes the brand's commitment to innovation while paying homage to its rich history in the bourbon industry.
Michter's Master Distiller, Dan McKee, expressed excitement about this latest offering, stating, "Over the years, our Bomberger's Declaration Bourbon has always possessed a rich, bold character. This new Bomberger's PFG™ sets out to continue our efforts to experiment with Bomberger's and push the boundaries of American whiskey. It is a beautiful expression with great texture and a remarkable spectrum of rich, full flavors. This is the result of our team's thoughtful research into wood science under very specific conditions."
The process of crafting Bomberger's PFG™ begins with Kentucky Straight Bourbon aging in a new, toasted, and charred American oak barrel. Following this initial maturation, the bourbon is transferred to a second custom-made, finely-grained French oak barrel, which has been specifically roasted and charred to demanding specifications. These barrels undergo stringent roasting at precisely defined temperatures for specific durations before being expertly charred. This meticulous attention to detail allows the bourbon to develop complex flavors as it matures in the second barrel, which results in a rich and nuanced final product.
Additionally, the finishing barrels are crafted from wood sourced from various renowned forests, including Tronçais, Allier, Nevers, and the Vosges. The wood utilized for these barrels has been air-dried naturally for a minimum of 40 months in the unique climate of the Charente River area of France. The environment's humidity, microflora, climate, wind direction, and altitude all contribute to the distinctive properties of the wood. After this careful aging, the staves are hand-selected to create the finishing barrels for Bomberger's PFG™.
Each step of the production process is undertaken with accuracy, ensuring that the final bourbon captures the essence of the wood. Andrea Wilson, Michter's Master of Maturation, shares her insights, stating, "The result is a blend of captivating aromas ranging from sweetness to floral notes, a flavor profile featuring beautifully integrated fruit and spicy notes with a full body and a luxurious, creamy texture that lingers with soft spices and chocolate."
The suggested retail price for a 750 ml bottle of Bomberger's PFG™ is set at $140. With this release, Michter's continues to honor its roots, including its Shenk's and Bomberger's Legacy offerings, and pays homage to the long history of the Pennsylvania distillery founded in 1753. This distillery originally known as Shenk's was renamed Bomberger's in 1800 before it became iconic as Michter's in the 20th century.
