Transforming Unused Postcards into Lifelines for Food Insecure Communities

Transforming Unused Postcards into Lifelines for Food Insecure Communities

In a year marked by rising food prices and insecurity, many are looking for ways to help those in need. The impact of the global food crisis is felt in every corner of the world, from Burkina Faso to Bangladesh. For instance, in Burkina Faso, staple foods have surged in price, now costing 1.5 times more than last year due to adverse weather, flooding, and conflicts, among other factors.

In response to these pressing challenges, the non-profit organization Hunger Free World (HFW) has launched a heartwarming initiative designed to transform unwanted postcards and stamps into vital support for individuals facing hunger. From December 1, 2025, until May 31, 2026, HFW will ramp up its 'Waste Postcard Collection Campaign,' urging the public to donate used and unsent postcards as well as stamps.

These collected items will be converted into funding, aiding self-sufficiency programs in four countries: Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Uganda. For families, donating items that may seem negligible, like an unused postcard, can contribute significantly by facilitating purchases of agricultural tools, maintenance of chicken farms, and supporting self-sufficient agriculture.

A Campaign with Impact

This annual collection campaign is crucial to HFW’s funding, accounting for approximately 80% of their financial resources. Last year, 83,196 individuals participated, generating an impressive 204,376,648 yen. Such a remarkable turnout demonstrates the collective commitment to supporting self-reliance among communities. The campaign's impact is further emphasized by how three postcards can provide the funding for one chick, which in turn helps families establish a sustainable source of food and income through egg production. Additionally, by donating five gift vouchers, two families can begin vegetable cultivation.

HFW prioritizes training local leaders who help run cooperatives in their communities to ensure these initiatives continue beyond the support phase. To deepen awareness and gratitude, HFW has also released a video showcasing the lives of the beneficiaries and the ongoing projects.

Building a Supportive Network

The 'Waste Postcard Collection Campaign' is supported by 219 organizations and businesses that share HFW's mission. Cooperatives, labor unions, and media outlets rally their members and clients through collection drives, expanding the circle of support. With more than 25 years of history, this campaign thrives on the collective effort of volunteers who help sort through the donated items.

Yet, despite its success, rising postal rates and increased operational costs present ongoing challenges. Since 2018, postal fees have surged three times, and projected fee changes in October 2024 will further strain resources. Furthermore, while the number of participating entities has increased, the actual collection has experienced a decline, resulting in a budget squeeze that threatens crucial projects in places like Burkina Faso, where residents had to abandon plans to protect their fields from soil erosion due to lack of funds.

A Call for Global Solidarity

As sentiments of division and exclusion rise globally, the shared human desire for better nutrition and education for children remains universal. The experience of Japan post-World War II, along with its pop culture appeal, resonates deeper than many might imagine in Africa and Asia. HFW emphasizes the importance of equipping individuals with knowledge of distant nations, so they can appreciate the interconnectedness of these efforts.

Through this campaign, HFW continues its mission to eradicate hunger globally. Participants can contribute to a cause that connects everyday actions with monumental changes in the lives of those struggling with food insecurity.
