'Taiko: I Wanted to Live in the Present' is set to grace the stage once again, marking its sixth revival after four years. This acclaimed play, authored by the wartime playwright Shigeo Kidani, has been a staple in the theatrical repertoire since its initial performance in 1976. The play will run from July 23 to July 26, 2026, at the Gekiba theatre located at Kudankita 1-10-2, Chiyoda, Tokyo.

The Story of 'Taiko'


The revival will showcase a fresh cast under the new configuration by Seitaro Asai. This performance promises to capture the raw essence of war as depicted by Kidani while utilizing innovative sound and light effects unique to the performance studio format. The audience will be invited to engage in crafting a new vision of 'Taiko' through this immersive experience.

The riveting tale unfolds as a young soldier, for the first time in his life, sets foot on the battlefield, engulfed by a dark sky devoid of stars and heavy silence. In this tense moment, he hears the distant echo of a drum, symbolizing the haunting reality of war.

Founded in June 1973, Gekidan Enson Butai, initially established by playwright Juro Miyoshi, began its journey with the innovative practice of live music during performances, delivering a fresh take compared to conventional theater styles. This unique combination of live music and theatrical storytelling has garnered much acclaim, allowing audiences to experience both the intense performances and the powerful acoustics.

In 2007, Seitaro Asai became the representative of the troupe, later converting their rehearsal space into a dedicated studio theatre, the Gekidan Enson Butai Atelier at Kudankita Gekiba. This venue focuses on creating an immersive experience through meticulous preparation and attention to the synergy between performer, music, lighting, and audience.

Through the vivid combination of dynamic music, language, movement, and stagecraft, the troupe continues to deliver a refreshingly new theatrical experience that transcends the boundaries of traditional musical theater.
