TIACT and Satisfactory Launch Recycling Project at Haneda Airport



Tokyo International Air Cargo Terminal Co., Ltd. (TIACT) has partnered with Satisfactory to kick off an innovative recycling initiative aimed at promoting resource circulation at Haneda Airport. This collaboration, which commenced in December 2024, has already made strides in waste management by recycling plastic waste generated within the airport facilities. In just three months, the project has managed to collect a staggering 43,515 kg of waste plastic, resulting in the reduction of approximately 136,637 kg of CO₂ emissions.

Background: Promoting Resource Circulation in the Aviation Industry


The aviation sector has witnessed an increased focus on decarbonization, leading to a critical examination of energy and resource utilization. Historically, waste generated from air cargo operations was often incinerated, contributing significantly to CO₂ emissions. The need for proper sorting and recycling practices has become apparent, as it allows for tangible improvements in environmental impact. Moreover, Narita Airport has been spearheading similar efforts since March 2023 through its 'Let's Reuse Resources at Narita Airport Project'. TIACT recognized the importance of these initiatives and, with the support of Satisfactory, began exploring collaborative solutions in November 2023, culminating in this project.

Project Overview: Transforming Waste Plastic into Garbage Bags


At the core of this initiative, TIACT targets the plastic waste produced in its facilities, implementing a resource circulation framework in partnership with Satisfactory. The collected plastic waste undergoes material recycling into regenerated resin, which TIACT then utilizes to produce garbage bags. This innovative approach is expected to lead to the recycling of approximately 172 tons of material annually, significantly reducing the reliance on virgin plastics derived from fossil fuels.

Achievements: Over 43 Tons of Waste Recovered in Three Months


Since the project's launch in December 2024, TIACT has successfully recovered 43,515 kg of plastic waste within just three months. This achievement equates to a CO₂ emissions reduction of 136,637 kg, which is comparable to the emissions generated from transporting around 272 tons of air cargo between Tokyo and Hong Kong. Previously, these types of waste would have been incinerated, contributing to increased CO₂ emissions, but this new scheme allows for the waste to be reused as a valuable resource. The project has also laid the groundwork for enhanced collaboration with stakeholders, paving the way for improvements in recycling rates.

A spokesperson from TIACT stated, "The resource circulation project at TIACT marks a significant step towards sustainable airport operations. Through this initiative, we have enhanced awareness of the systems needed for waste sorting and collection, enabling us to initiate practical actions towards a circular economy. Moving forward, we aim to further expand this effort in collaboration with stakeholders."

Future Prospects: Expanding Resource Circulation Initiatives


Looking ahead, TIACT plans to broaden the scope of its resource circulation initiatives. By fiscal year 2025, the company aims to explore the potential for recycling wooden pallets and wood chips produced within its facilities. This expansion would lead to the establishment of a comprehensive framework for proper treatment and reuse of various materials, extending beyond plastic waste to encompass a variety of resources.
