Major Nuclear Fuel Supply Agreement in Southern Ohio
In a significant development for the nuclear energy sector, Oklo Inc. has signed a Letter of Intent with Centrus Energy Corp. to establish one of the first large-scale commercial agreements for high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). This partnership aims to support the anticipated deployment of up to five Aurora powerhouses, part of Oklo's ambitious Clean Energy Campus project in Southern Ohio, which is expected to generate 1.2 gigawatts of clean energy.
Centrus, a key player in the uranium enrichment and nuclear fuel services industry, is set to supply Oklos with enough HALEU to sustain operations over multiple years, with delivery timelines slated to begin in 2029. This arrangement, which could involve prepayments from Oklo, not only ensures a domestic supply of this crucial fuel but also mitigates one of the primary constraints currently plaguing the advanced nuclear sector—access to locally sourced HALEU.
The significance of this agreement transcends just fuel supply. It represents a merging of necessary elements for the advancement of nuclear power generation in the region: a dependable domestic fuel source, burgeoning customer demand, and robust project execution led by experienced engineering partners. This is particularly noteworthy given the challenges many advanced nuclear projects face today regarding fuel access and regulatory hurdles.
The collaborative effort aligns with Oklo's strategy, established earlier this year through a partnership with Meta, which focused on securing financial commitments to ensure project success for its planned Aurora facilities. Centrus, on its part, is leaning into funding that includes a substantial $900 million HALEU task order awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy, demonstrating shared confidence in getting this initiative off the ground successfully.
Jacob DeWitte, co-founder and CEO of Oklo, emphasized the expected positive impacts: "This agreement merges core elements of advanced nuclear power generation with an accessible fuel supply and real customer demand. Southern Ohio is poised to leverage decades of nuclear experience alongside a highly skilled workforce, essential for transitioning advanced nuclear from conceptual planning to real-world deployment."
Centrus President and CEO Amir Vexler echoed these sentiments, calling the agreement a crucial milestone in the quest to revitalize America's uranium enrichment capacity. He noted, "This partnership helps lay the groundwork for a new hub of advanced nuclear energy in the U.S., directly connecting generation with a domestic supply of HALEU in Southern Ohio."
The implications of the Aurora powerhouse initiative are significant not only for energy production but also for employment opportunities in the region. The construction phase of these projects is expected to create over 700 full-time jobs, while ongoing operations could yield around 40 to 50 permanent positions per powerhouse. Cumulatively, with the potential deployment of sequential units, this could result in additional job creation, translating to hundreds of new roles supporting various operations, from technical support to maintenance activities.
Moreover, Centrus's recent expansion efforts are projected to add another 1,000 construction jobs and 300 new operational positions within Ohio, further solidifying the state's importance in nuclear energy production. At the same time, Oklo’s innovative design for the fast fission powerhouses features state-of-the-art liquid-metal cooling technology, which prioritizes low-water use and emission levels, aligning perfectly with modern industrial growth initiatives.
