Expanding Rice Consumption Through Engaging Onigiri Experiences
On June 4, 2021, Pal System, a cooperative federation based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, successfully conducted an interactive event called the "Onigiri Good" experience exchange. This initiative aims to enhance rice consumption and food education among its members. Leading this endeavor were the active users who participated in the event by preparing and enjoying onigiri, a traditional Japanese rice ball. Participants not only made onigiri but also contributed to a charitable cause as part of the cooperative's vow to donate directly sourced rice to children's cafeterias based on the number of actions logged during the event.
Participants Create Their Own Onigiri
The onigiri experience was designed for users committed to promoting the Onigiri Good initiative. Attendees from various localities came together to select rice and a variety of fillings to create their personalized onigiri. The event offered white rice, as well as rice with Matsuyama fried tofu and hijiki, alongside diverse fillings including pickled mustard greens, mentaiko (spicy cod roe), cheese, seaweed, and sliced eel. Each participant crafted their own rice ball according to personal taste, making the event not just an educational experience but also a culinary delight.
As they enjoyed their onigiri and miso soup, participants engaged in discussions on innovative ideas for expanding rice consumption, reinforcing the importance of these grassroots activities.
Taking Small Steps for Support
The Onigiri Good initiative emphasizes counting every participant's actions, defining their engagement as “actions” taken toward promoting rice consumption. The program entails a commitment to donate one ton of direct-sourced rice for every 10,000 actions logged, supporting local food banks and children's cafeterias. This form of engagement contributes to both the encouragement of Japan's primary industries and social contributions.
During the event, the actions accumulated equated to the respective number of participants, promoting a sense of collective purpose as they strive toward their donation goals.
Supporting Producers Through Personal Choices
Yumiko Takahashi, chairperson of the product committee, expressed the vision by saying, "Let’s elevate the Onigiri Good initiative through enjoyable and heartfelt participation, allowing all involved—eaters and makers alike—to share in the joy of food. The personal act of eating holds the key to fostering food self-sufficiency, starting from an understanding of where our products come from and the significance behind our actions."
Pal System intends to bridge various committees—product, direct sourcing, and welfare—to share the values of the initiative with as many members as possible, ultimately enhancing rice consumption across the board.
