Canon Achieves Third-Party Verification for GHG Emission Reduction Calculation Under IEC Standard

Canon's Milestone in GHG Emission Reduction

In a significant move towards sustainability, Canon has successfully calculated and received third-party verification for its contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction based on the international standard IEC 63372. This verification, carried out by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO), marks a pioneering achievement in Japan.

The IEC 63372 standard, issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in January 2026, provides methodologies for quantifying the GHG reduction contributions of products and services. As climate change becomes an increasingly pressing global issue, companies are now obligated not only to reduce their own emissions but also to contribute to the reduction of emissions across society through their products and services.

Canon's assessment focused on the OCT-R1 ophthalmic device, which integrates both optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus photography capabilities into a single unit. The evaluation compared GHG emissions from using one OCT-R1 device versus two older models, the OCT-A1 and CR-2 AF. The findings suggest that using the OCT-R1 could facilitate significant social-wide reductions in GHG emissions, validating the importance of shifting toward more environmentally friendly technologies.

Prior to the IEC 63372 standard, companies independently assessed their GHG reduction contributions, often leading to inconsistencies in methodologies. Canon actively participated in discussions to develop this international standard, reinforcing the need for unified evaluation criteria across the electronics industry.

By adhering to the IEC 63372 framework, Canon not only establishes transparency in its calculations but also ensures that its emissions reduction contributions are credible and verifiable. The company has clearly outlined the comparison conditions and assumptions used in its calculations, further enhancing the trustworthiness of the findings.

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Canon plans to expand the range of products eligible for GHG reduction calculations. The company aims to leverage its innovations in technology to contribute significantly to climate change mitigation efforts, striving for a sustainable society.

The rise of universally accepted standards like IEC 63372 is expected to create a feedback loop where transparent disclosures lead to informed decisions by customers and financial institutions, fostering a pathway toward a decarbonized future.

The OCT-R1 device is a testament to Canon's dedication to marrying technology with environmental responsibility. As it continues to grow its product line with sustainability in mind, Canon remains committed to playing a pivotal role in environmental stewardship and the fight against climate change.
