Kyorin University Hospital Launches Smartwatch Clinic
Starting from July 2, 2025, Kyorin University Hospital's Suginami branch will introduce a cutting-edge 'Smartwatch Clinic.' This exciting initiative aims to integrate health data collected from personal devices like smartwatches and smartphones into patient care, allowing for a more tailored approach to healthcare management.
The Smartwatch Clinic will utilize commonly worn devices such as the Apple Watch, which can automatically record various health metrics including step count, walking distance, heart rate, and calorie consumption. Moreover, patients can connect their devices, such as blood pressure monitors, scales, and continuous glucose monitors, via Bluetooth to gather crucial health information, including blood pressure, weight, body fat percentage, and blood glucose levels.
Traditionally, patients would display their smartphone health metrics during consultations or bring printed documents to their appointments. However, the new clinic will take this a step further by securely storing health data on a cloud platform, allowing physicians to access and review it directly through electronic health records during visits. This modern approach not only alleviates the load on patients during consultations but also enables seamless sharing of health information with their primary care physicians, resulting in more detailed medical oversight and smoother collaboration with local healthcare facilities.
The clinic's emphasis on digitalization aims to address the advancements and challenges faced by modern healthcare. Dr. Hirotaka Yada, the head of the Cardiology Department at Kyorin University, expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, stating that the integration of health data through smartphones and smartwatches is a significant leap forward in providing patient-centered care. He remarked,
"In contemporary society, digitalization is becoming increasingly prevalent in various fields, yet the medical sector is still evolving in this regard. Our new Smartwatch Clinic leverages the health data stored on phones and watches through the cloud to enhance everyday medical practices."
Dr. Yada further noted that utilizing these everyday tools can significantly contribute to individuals' health improvements and the management of chronic conditions, enabling a healthcare model that aligns with the digital era.
The clinic will cater to a wide range of health issues, including lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, as well as cardiovascular conditions like atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Given the importance of routine health management for these ailments, ongoing support based on daily health data is paramount.
Although this initiative is in its infancy and may encounter challenges, there exists the potential for a shared journey of innovating future healthcare between patients and medical professionals. Dr. Yada encouraged potential patients to reach out through their regular healthcare providers to schedule appointments, thus fostering a collaborative spirit in this groundbreaking venture.
