As of May 7, 2025, TSA will no longer accept state-issued IDs that do not comply with REAL ID standards at airport security checkpoints. This change affects all airline passengers aged 18 and over, including those enrolled in TSA PreCheck, who will need to present either a REAL ID-compliant identification or an alternative acceptable form of ID, such as a U.S. passport.

For passengers who provide a non-compliant ID and lack an alternative, there will be additional screening measures and potential delays, possibly preventing them from advancing through security altogether.

Currently, 81% of travelers at TSA checkpoints present an acceptable form of identification, which comprises REAL ID-compliant IDs. With the deadline approaching, the TSA anticipates a significant increase in the issuance of REAL IDs. The agency will continue to apply screening measures for those who have not obtained a REAL ID until it is not considered a vulnerability.
