DOC Community Generously Donates $600K to Transform Children's Nutrition with Eat Real

DOC Community's Generous Support for Eat Real

In a remarkable show of support, the DOC Longevity and Health community has rallied to donate over $600,000 to Eat Real, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the nutrition and health of children in preK-12 schools across the United States. This substantial contribution underscores the urgent need to address the nutritional crisis affecting America’s youth, a reality powerfully articulated by Eat Real's CEO, Nora LaTorre, during her keynote address at the inaugural DOC gathering held in October 2024.

The Crisis at Hand

LaTorre shed light on the alarming statistic that today's children will experience a drastically shorter lifespan projected at 693 fewer sunsets compared to their parents, primarily due to diseases linked to ultra-processed foods. Currently, about 67% of the calories consumed by children in America come from these unhealthy sources. She emphasized, "Our kids are the ones getting sicker, sooner," highlighting the critical nature of the situation.

As public schools serve a staggering 7 billion meals annually to 30 million children, LaTorre pointed out that there is a viable solution to combat this crisis. With its data-driven preK-12 school food certification program, Eat Real aims to redefine what's served in schools to promote better nutrition and, consequently, advocate for disease prevention from an early age.

Impact of the DOC Community's Donations

The heartfelt commitment shown by members of the DOC community, spurred by LaTorre's compelling presentation, resulted in significant pledges, most notably a $250,000 grant from Michael Tang of the Cyrus and Michael Tang Foundation. This funding aims to kickstart the Eat Real certification program in Nevada, with additional contributions from prominent community leaders like Kevin Ryan and Pascaline Servan-Schreiber to support the cause.

This financial backing will be crucial in expanding Eat Real's outreach to over 1,000,000 students in up to 10 new states in 2025, thereby amplifying the initiative's impact on children's health nationwide. LaTorre expressed gratitude, stating, "We are so grateful to the DOC community for their generosity and support. It means the world — and the future — to our kids."

A Unified Mission for Health

Jordan Shlain, co-founder of the DOC community and also serving as the Board Chair of Eat Real, facilitated the collaboration between these two organizations. He noted that the community's broader goal involves finding innovative ways to extend health and happiness, emphasizing that enhancing children's longevity is a top priority. While DOC approaches this challenge through scientific research, Eat Real takes on the task through nutrition and community initiatives.

This initiative indicates a growing wave of societal responsibility and collaboration that could fundamentally shift how children's nutrition is approached in America. The DOC community’s contributions combined with Eat Real’s strategic plan can pave the way for transformative change in public school nutrition.

Looking Ahead

The next DOC gathering is set for October 12th - 14th, 2025, at The Estate Yountville, where further discussions on health and science will take place. All interested parties can learn more about these initiatives at DOC.health and Eat Real. In the meantime, Nora LaTorre’s enlightening talk can be viewed online, and individuals are encouraged to join as donors to amplify the positive impact being made.

The concerted effort by the DOC community is a reminder of the power of collaboration and commitment to nurturing future generations through improved nutrition. Together, they aim to rewrite the narrative of children's health in America, one meal at a time.
