UrbanGeekz Celebrates Gamechangers in Tech with the 2024 UrbanGeekz 50 List
UrbanGeekz Celebrates Leaders in Tech
On December 17, 2024, UrbanGeekz, an independent digital news platform owned by Black entrepreneurs, unveiled its much-anticipated 2nd annual UrbanGeekz 50 list. This prestigious list highlights fifty remarkable individuals who have made significant contributions in technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship across multiple sectors.
UrbanGeekz's commitment to showcasing talent in the tech industry is reflected in the diverse cohort selected for this year’s list. The honorees were chosen based on a comprehensive evaluation involving unique data points that assessed their influence, reach, and the overall impact of their work within various industries. Kunbi Tinuoye, the founder and CEO of UrbanGeekz, stated, “Our goal is to recognize disruptors who not only excel in their fields but also provide mentorship and resources to uplift their communities.”
Just like last year, the 2024 list spans ten major categories that showcase the achievements of pioneers, innovators, and leaders. The categories include Software, Venture, FinTech, AI & Machine Learning, Digital Media, Food, Climate & Health, Business-to-Consumer, and others. The aim is to shine a light on both tech-savvy entrepreneurs and those contributing to their local ecosystems.
Among the standout figures featured this year is Candace Mitchell, a Georgia Tech alum who has transformed her AI-driven haircare brand into an influential global business over the past decade. Another notable honoree is Asegun Henry, the founder and CTO of Fourth Power, known for developing energy technologies that tackle climate change through innovative research and scientific breakthroughs.
The list also highlights Fawn Weaver, the visionary behind Uncle Nearest, which is now valued at an impressive $1.1 billion, making waves as one of the fastest-growing whiskey brands in the U.S. Additionally, Sam Udotong, an MIT graduate and the co-founder of Fireflies.ai, has secured over $19 million in funding to simplify meeting experiences through generative AI.
This year’s focus also extends to the importance of community and mentorship. Tinuoye emphasized the role of leaders in the Community Builders and Ecosystem Warriors category, which recognizes those championing the development of Black innovators amid challenging circumstances. “We aim to celebrate those who foster community and create essential pathways for fellow innovators,” Tinuoye added.
Notably, for the Digital Media vertical, UrbanGeekz chose to exclusively spotlight Black male leaders in response to narratives often sidelined in mainstream media. DéVon Christopher Johnson, the CEO of BleuLife Media Group, has made strides in targeting multicultural audiences while co-founding a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Black-owned media ventures.
The 2024 UrbanGeekz 50 list stands as a testament to the extraordinary talents and groundbreaking leaders producing change in their communities and beyond. With the sponsorship of SL DeBarros Law Firm, which specializes in providing legal services for business, labor, employment, and entertainment sectors, this year’s awards mark another pivotal moment for UrbanGeekz as it continues to amplify the voices and stories of Black innovators worldwide.
In conclusion, the UrbanGeekz 50 not only celebrates current achievements but also fosters a future where diversity and innovation thrive, encouraging the next generation of tech leaders to follow in these inspiring footsteps.
