New AFSP Program Offers Support for Survivors of Suicide Loss in the Community

New AFSP Program Offers Community Support

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has recently launched an important initiative aimed at aiding individuals affected by suicide loss through its program, Caring Communities Guidance for Supporting Survivors of Suicide Loss. This program highlights the profound impact of suicide on those left behind and strives to create a supportive environment for healing and connection.

In the United States alone, the tragedy of suicide affects approximately 135 people per incident on average. The statistics reveal that nearly 50,000 individuals lose their lives to suicide every year, and 1.6 million make an attempt. The effects ripple outward, touching friends, family, colleagues, and entire communities. Trisha Calabrese, AFSP's Senior Vice President of Programs, notes the challenge in approaching this sensitive topic despite its prevalence.
