Empowering Filipino Children Through Education: A Stage Show for Change
In recognition of UN Day on October 24, 2025, the business voice training school, Voice Crew, is set to hold a profound theatrical event titled "For the Hand of That Flower". Scheduled from October 29 to November 2 at SYD Hall in Yoyogi, Tokyo, this performance aims to shed light on the plight of children living in the Smoky Mountain region of the Philippines. Alongside the show, a crowdfunding campaign will be launched to provide educational support funds for these children.
Why Focus on Educational Support Now?
The initiative to help children in the Philippines began in 2017 when Voice Crew experienced the harsh realities faced by children working in the Smoky Mountain as part of the efforts of a non-profit organization. A visit to the area revealed not just awful living conditions but also the resilience of these children as they sift through garbage, looking for valuables alongside their families with smiles on their faces. Unfortunately, as they grow older, many of them face despair, illness, and accidents that often lead to fatal outcomes.
The lack of literacy restricts these individuals' access to information and educational opportunities, leaving most of them trapped in a cycle of poverty. To address this, Voice Crew initiated the support of preschool education, aiming to broaden the right to learn and give these children their first step towards a brighter future, with collaborative support from Japan.
Reflecting on True Happiness
A poignant excerpt from Chie Yamaguchi's book, "Stars Fall in Pattaya," asks, "Are you truly living?" This question lies at the heart of the performance. Despite Japan's wealth and higher GDP, the happiness gap between it and the Philippines is a mere 0.14 points. It emphasizes the vital need to reassess happiness, which cannot solely be measured by economic prosperity.
During my recent visit to the Smoky Mountain, the resilience displayed by these children taught me the importance of never giving up, regardless of circumstances. Through this endeavor, I hope to inspire audiences to reconsider their own happiness and recognize the beauty of their lives.
