Exciting Kids' Day at Kasumigaseki: Discovering Sports and Fun

The much-anticipated Kids' Kasumigaseki Day was held by the Sports Agency from August 6 to August 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan. This event offered a variety of programs, including the unique “Paper Balloon Hockey,” conceived by Minister Murofushi, allowing many children to experience the joy and diversity of sports. This two-day event truly embodied the spirit of sports and showcased its potential to empower the young.

The Kids' Day at Kasumigaseki is a collaborative effort involving various ministries located in Kasumigaseki. Its main objectives are to broaden children's understanding of society during the summer vacation, deepen their awareness of government initiatives, and foster closer connections between parents and their children through participatory activities. By experiencing government operations, children are encouraged to step into new worlds and discover what the government does for them.

Unique Activities for Children

Paper Balloon Hockey

One of the highlights of the event was the “Paper Balloon Hockey,” an imaginative game that utilized paper balloons and hand fans. Children displayed serious concentration as they chased the balloons, and the atmosphere was electrified with cheers and laughter as the competition heated up. The joy on the children’s faces was priceless as they engaged in this one-of-a-kind sport, designed to bridge creativity and athletics.

Wheelchair Sports Experience (Wheelchair Rugby / Wheelchair Tennis)

The wheelchair sports section was particularly impressive, featuring activities like wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis. Children initially looked surprised by the powerful sound of wheelchairs colliding on the field; however, they quickly became captivated by the speed and intensity of the games. Many were so enthralled that they returned to try again, eagerly participating in the fast-paced excitement.

In wheelchair tennis, some kids astutely executed incredible smashes under the guidance of skilled instructors. It was heartwarming to see parents and children trying their best together, exploring the accessibility and excitement of wheelchair sports that provide unique challenges.

A Variety of Fun Sports Activities

Taking place on the 32nd floor of the Ministry’s East Building, with breathtaking views of Tokyo Tower, the lounge transformed into a hub for diverse sports experiences, such as Boccia and virtual sports. Children enjoyed moving their bodies and engaged with unfamiliar sports, relishing the fun of discovering new activities.

Additionally, the event featured an awareness corner addressing heatstroke, showcasing innovative technology using “Lotus Ceramics,” designed to cool surfaces through evaporation. Children were fascinated as they touched the cool surface, giving them a sensory appreciation of future sports technologies aimed at combating heat-related issues during competitions and outdoor activities. Families gathered around, showing genuine interest in these advancements.
