Discover a Life Like a Journey with Sho Sekkei's New Internship Program

In July 2025, Sho Sekkei, an architectural consulting firm based in Shibuya, Tokyo, will commence an exciting internship program aimed at students. With a philosophy centered around "creating joy together," this initiative enables students to merge their imaginative ideas with practical space proposals. The program invites university and graduate students to participate in a hands-on workshop experience that embodies the theme of "living like you're on a journey" while emphasizing the potential of local communities.

Five-Day Journey Living Internship

This internship spans five days and focuses on creating spaces that can serve dual purposes: serving as second homes or retreats during natural disasters. Students will collaborate with employees on innovative design proposals, with the best ideas possibly being implemented in real projects. The internship will take place during two sessions:

• - Session 1: August 25 (Mon) - August 29 (Fri), 2025
• - Session 2: September 8 (Mon) - September 12 (Fri), 2025

Internship Objectives

Participants will experience various stages, from land scouting to space design and financial planning, all essential for developing comprehensive living solutions. The internship includes:

• - Discovery Phase: Identifying ideal land with features such as being within 100km of the capital and compatibility with safety and comfort.

- Challenges: Assessing the land's value based on geography, transportation, and market conditions.
- Goal: Understand the potential of locations as foundational elements in spatial design.

• - Design Phase: Redefining space and function to incorporate daily living elements while considering community relations.

- Challenges: Designing spaces that interweave functionality with lived experiences.
- Goal: Find a balance between creativity and practicality within set constraints.

• - Finance Phase: Developing a self-sustaining economic model to ensure long-term viability.

- Challenges: Planning initial investments and operational costs while constructing a profitable revenue model.
- Goal: Integrate realistic business viability with aspirational concepts.

• - Communication Phase: Crafting strategies to communicate the project’s value to society.

- Challenges: Effectively conveying concepts and developing narratives that generate empathy.
- Goal: Cultivate the ability to promote the charm of "life like a journey" within the community.

One-Day Creative Workshops

In addition to the internship, Sho Sekkei will hold one-day workshops on:

• - Survival Space Design Workshop: Using versatile materials to create multifunctional spaces suitable for emergency situations.

- Materials: Blue tarps and other simple supplies.
- Objective: Encourage creativity and adaptability under constraints.

• - Deep Local Research Workshop: Discover and disseminate unique values based on local culture, history, and people’s activities.

- Objective: Develop the skills to express and connect with regions through their distinct characteristics.

Given the declining workforce in various industries, especially construction, this program aims to draw out the creative thinking of students.
