Cohen Veterans Network's Holiday Donation Initiative
Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), a nonprofit focused on providing mental health services to veterans and their families, has announced a new initiative aimed at combating food insecurity among military families this holiday season. The organization has pledged a total of $22,000, distributing $1,000 each to 22 food banks across the country that serve communities with its Military Family Clinics. This initiative is designed to support those who have served and their families, addressing the critical issue of food access during the holidays.
Addressing Food Insecurity
According to a recent survey conducted by the Military Family Advisory Network, the prevalence of food insecurity among currently serving military families has risen significantly, climbing to 27.7% in 2023 from 23.3% just two years prior. This alarming trend highlights the ongoing struggles faced by military families, many of whom experience significant financial stress.
Dr. Anthony Hassan, President and CEO of CVN, expressed the organization's commitment to addressing these pressing challenges. "Food insecurity continues to be a significant challenge for many military families. By supporting local food banks, we aim to ease the burden of military families, helping to ensure they have access to the food they need this holiday season," he stated.
A Holistic Approach to Care
CVN's initiative reflects a broader commitment to holistic care, extending beyond mental health services. The organization's 22 clinics don’t just provide therapy; they also offer comprehensive case management support that tackles various social determinants of health such as employment, finances, housing, and food insecurity.
The support for food banks not only addresses immediate needs but also resonates with CVN’s mission of fostering resilience among military families. "We are proud to stand alongside the communities we serve, addressing not only mental health needs but also the broader challenges that impact military families," Dr. Hassan added.
Impact Since 2016
Since its formation in 2016, CVN has significantly impacted the lives of veterans and their families. The network has treated over 78,000 clients, providing more than 675,000 clinical sessions that address a wide range of mental health issues, including PTSD, anxiety, relationship problems, and children’s behavioral issues.
Care is available through in-person visits at the clinics and online via CVN Telehealth, ensuring that clients can access services regardless of their location.
A Call to Action
This holiday season, CVN encourages communities to rally together and support their local food banks in any way they can. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference in the lives of those who have served this country and are now facing hardships.
As the holiday season approaches, it's essential to remember that behind the bravery and sacrifices of military service members and their families, there may lie unseen struggles, including food insecurity. CVN's initiative serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to support each other and ensure that all families, especially those who have served, have what they need to thrive during this special time of year.
