Episcopal Relief & Development Assists Globe, Arizona Residents in Flood Recovery
In late September, a devastating flash flood struck Globe, Arizona, resulting in tragic losses and significant damage to the community. Partnering with the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona, Episcopal Relief & Development has mobilized to provide extensive support. This flooding disaster claimed the lives of at least four individuals and left a trail of destruction, notably sweeping away approximately 1,000 propane tanks, creating hazardous situations in the downtown area. Local officials have declared parts of downtown unsafe, prompting numerous businesses to close temporarily.
The Rt. Rev. Jennifer Reddall, Bishop of the Diocese of Arizona, emphasized the scale of the calamity, noting that the flood struck during a busy Friday night when many restaurants were filled with patrons. "The devastation and loss of life is substantial," she said, highlighting the impact felt by the residents. The state of Arizona, along with various relief agencies and volunteers, has been actively involved in providing immediate assistance to the affected families.
Episcopal Relief & Development is playing a crucial role in the recovery efforts by offering financial aid to families who are facing temporary unemployment due to business closures and other challenges stemming from the flooding. To streamline this effort, St. John's Episcopal Church in Globe has been designated as a central hub. This church serves not only as a place of refuge but also as a resource center for social, emotional, and spiritual care, assisting residents in navigating the path toward recovery.
Race Hodges, a Program Officer at Episcopal Relief & Development, expressed deep sorrow for the loss of life and the ongoing struggle for recovery, stating, "We are saddened whenever any lives are lost, and we know that healing and recovery after this disaster will take time." He also reiterated the importance of collaboration with the Diocese of Arizona, emphasizing the trust they have built within the community.
The partnership aims to empower families affected by this disaster, providing them with a sense of agency as they work on their recovery plans. The long-term vision of Episcopal Relief & Development is not just the immediate response to this disaster but also creating sustainable and impactful long-term strategies for rebuilding lives.
As the community continues to heal, prayers are being requested for those affected by the floods.
