The 6th Japan Service Award: A Celebration of Innovation

The 6th Japan Service Award, recognized by the Prime Minister, is set to honor innovative and excellent services provided within Japan. The award aims to elevate the productivity of the service industry, contributing to sustained economic growth across the nation. Scheduled for the winter of 2027, the award ceremony will unveil the winners of this prestigious honor, with applications officially opening on September 14, 2026, and closing on October 29, 2026.

To support prospective applicants, an informational session will take place on August 27, 2026, to outline the application process and criteria. Following this, one-on-one consultation meetings will be offered starting September, allowing applicants to receive tailored guidance in preparing their submissions.

Originated by the Service Productivity and Innovation for Growth (SPRING) under the Japan Productivity Center, the Japan Service Award is inclusive, welcoming entries from private service providers across all regions, scales, and industries in Japan. The initiative has been running since 2015, awarding a total of 142 outstanding services across five editions. This year, the award aims to uncover and spotlight innovative services that have the potential to reshape everyday life and future economic landscapes in a country facing declining population and various social challenges.

The awards will feature several categories including the Prime Minister’s Award, Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Award, Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Award, and several other esteemed recognitions, providing various paths to acknowledgment depending on the submissions received. Notably, services that win will not only receive accolades but will also be promoted through publications on the award’s website and case study volumes.

The breakdown for the 6th Japan Service Award is as follows:

• - Target Participants: All businesses delivering services (including secondary industries and primary industries, excluding governmental services).
• - Types of Awards: Prime Minister’s Award, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Award, among others. Please note that some awards may not be granted if there are no qualifying submissions.
• - Schedule: Application period from September 14 to October 29, 2026. Initial document screening runs from November to December 2026, with second screening from December 2026 to April 2027, followed by site evaluations in April 2027.
