Con Agg Global and NYCEDC Unveil Blue Highway Facility to Enhance Freight Transport in the Bronx

New Blue Highway Facility in the Bronx

Con Agg Global, in partnership with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), has announced its plans to establish a new waterside transloading facility in Hunts Point, Bronx, scheduled to begin operations later this year. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance transportation efficiency and reduce traffic congestion by utilizing the city’s waterways for freight movement.

Background of the Initiative

As one of New York City’s busiest transportation hubs, Hunts Point sees a staggering number of truck trips each day, which contribute to significant congestion and pollution concerns. This new facility is designed to address these issues by shifting freight transport from land to water, aiming to eliminate approximately 1,000 truck trips per month. This move not only helps decongest local roads but also aligns with the city's commitment to sustainable transportation practices.

The facility will primarily serve the Fulton Fish Market and broader Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, focusing on the waterborne transport of wholesale food and beverages. By tapping into the potential of New York’s waterways, the facility will mitigate the heavy reliance on truck transport, contributing to a cleaner environment.

Structural Design and Operations

The facility will employ an innovative barge design optimized for quick deployment and high capacity. This modular pier system is similar to designs used successfully in Europe and aligns well with ongoing construction projects within the city, including those at Governors Island and JFK Airport. The design allows for increased operational flexibility to meet the evolving demands of freight logistics in New York.

In addition to bulk food and beverage transport, the facility will also cater to micro-freight, incorporating heavy-duty cargo bicycles and small barges. This diversification of freight methods promises to further alleviate the burden of truck traffic in the Hunts Point area.

Financial Backing and Support

Con Agg Global's venture is backed by equity partners BDT and MSD Partners, with expertise and capital contributions from industry veteran William (Bill) J. Sandbrook. His extensive background in construction and logistics will strengthen the operational capabilities of this new facility.

New York City officials, including Deputy Mayor Adolfo Carrion Jr., have emphasized the significance of this project in enhancing the local economy and quality of life for Bronx residents. The Blue Highways initiative that this new facility is part of emphasizes innovative public-private partnerships and aims to establish a resilient network for goods transportation throughout New York City.

Community and Environmental Impact

Community leaders have expressed optimism regarding the positive impacts of this facility. Council Member Rafael Salamanca highlighted the importance of reducing truck-related pollution that has negatively affected the health of local residents. The facility represents a commitment to creating an environmentally sustainable future for the South Bronx and aims to provide jobs and economic opportunities without compromising air quality.
