National Police Association Supports HILTON Act to Protect Officers' Rights and Dignity

National Police Association Endorses the HILTON Act

The National Police Association (NPA) has recently voiced its strong support for the Halting Inappropriate Limits Targeting Officers Now (HILTON) Act, a legislative proposal designed to address the disturbing pattern of service discrimination against federal immigration officers. Reports have surfaced that these officers are being denied service at various establishments, including restaurants, hotels, and gas stations, solely due to their official duties. Such actions not only undermine the work of law enforcement but also pose significant challenges for officers attempting to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

The HILTON Act seeks to prohibit federal agencies from entering into contracts with businesses that exhibit discriminatory practices against law enforcement officers. Introduced by Representative Cory Mills from Florida's 7th district, the bill is currently under review by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The intention behind this act is clear: to prevent federal funds from being allocated to entities that demonstrate blatant disregard for the service and sacrifices of law enforcement personnel.

Under the provisions of the HILTON Act, various businesses are included, such as those providing lodging, food and beverage, healthcare services, and equipment rental. Importantly, brands that fall under a parent corporation will be treated as a single entity for the purposes of this legislation. This approach aims to create a more comprehensive framework for addressing discrimination against officers.

Paula Fitzsimmons, the Legislative Director of the NPA, emphasized the importance of this bill in safeguarding the dignity of law enforcement officials. “Law enforcement officers are being denied service simply for wearing a badge and upholding our nation's laws. While these businesses may claim a right to refuse service, they should not be rewarded with federal contracts for their discriminatory choices,” she stated. Fitzsimmons called for the passage of the HILTON Act, asserting that tax dollars should not support businesses that wrongfully penalize the dedicated men and women of federal law enforcement.

The NPA is grateful for Representative Mills' efforts in bringing forward the HILTON Act. By prohibiting federal agencies from contracting with those businesses that willfully discriminate against federal law enforcement officers, the bill not only promotes fairness but also sends a clear message regarding the respect that law enforcement officials deserve. In doing so, the legislation aims to reinforce the notion that the nation's law enforcement is valued and appreciated.

As the discourse around law enforcement and public service continues, it becomes imperative for Congress to act on this pressing issue. The NPA urges lawmakers to support the HILTON Act and ensure that it is passed in order to affirm the importance of treating law enforcement officers with the dignity and respect they merit.
