Major Philanthropic Coalition Launches NextLadder Ventures to Improve Economic Mobility for Americans

NextLadder Ventures: A New Era of Economic Mobility

On July 17, 2025, a significant initiative was announced that aims to transform the economic landscape for low-income Americans. A coalition of prominent foundations and philanthropists, including the Ballmer Group, Gates Foundation, Stand Together, Valhalla Foundation, and John Overdeck, launched NextLadder Ventures. This ambitious program is backed by over $1 billion and seeks to empower individuals and families by providing them with personalized, technology-driven solutions.

The primary goal of NextLadder Ventures is to create pathways for economic prosperity for every American, regardless of their current financial situation. The initiative recognizes that too many people face daunting barriers such as job loss, housing instability, or unexpected health crises, which can derail their chances of success. Over the next 15 years, NextLadder Ventures will focus on funding entrepreneurs and organizations that are dedicated to developing innovative solutions tailored to meet the needs of those who require support the most.

Among the efforts included in this initiative is the provision of grants, equity financing, and revenue-based financing to both nonprofit and for-profit entities. By leveraging these financial resources, NextLadder Ventures aims to catalyze a thriving market designed to attract ongoing investments that can help remove the systemic obstacles hindering economic mobility. In doing so, it will extend support to many existing initiatives already working to enhance opportunities across the United States.

"The future depends on empowering every person to realize their potential," stated Brian Hooks, CEO of Stand Together. He went on to explain that millions of Americans are currently wrestling with barriers that impede their ability to achieve economic success. The initiative seeks to change that by pairing cutting-edge technology with empathetic support.

The venture aims to assist over 90 million individuals in the U.S. who are struggling to advance economically, as well as the 1.6 million professionals in the social sector—such as social workers and legal aid attorneys—who guide these individuals through significant life challenges. By equipping these frontline helpers, who often manage overwhelming caseloads, with scalable technological tools, NextLadder Ventures plans to enhance their capacity to reach and assist more people.

As Kevin Bromer, the executive director at Ballmer Group, stated, "Technology can be an accelerator of tremendous social progress when harnessed for good." The goal is to support remarkable projects and innovative ideas while ensuring that emerging entrepreneurs have the necessary resources to build tools that make a real difference in people's lives.

NextLadder Ventures emphasizes user-friendly design, prioritizing safety, privacy, and community engagement in the development of technological solutions. This approach guarantees that the voices of those who are most in need shape the tools designed to help them. The effectiveness of the initiative will ultimately be assessed based on tangible improvements in people's lives, such as increased incomes, enhanced support systems, and greater opportunities for self-advancement.

Mark Suzman, CEO of the Gates Foundation, highlighted the transformative capabilities of technology in tackling poverty. He expressed that "NextLadder Ventures brings together the vision, resources, and community connections necessary to create solutions for millions of Americans and the frontline workers who support them." Suzman’s statement reflects the urgency and importance of this endeavor.

Serving as the CEO of NextLadder Ventures is Ryan Rippel, whose roots stem from experiences of growing up with a single mother in Missouri. He advocates for personalized pathways to opportunity, arguing against the outdated ‘one-size-fits-all’ strategies previously used to combat economic challenges. Rippel affirmed that innovative, practical solutions must meet the unique needs of affected individuals and families. "When technology is developed with these considerations in mind, combined with the work of committed philanthropists, it can become a significant force for positive change," he emphasized.

John Overdeck has also committed substantial resources to this venture, underscoring his belief in the role of social mobility in shaping a better future for all.

To add to the initiative’s technological edge, Anthropic—a pioneering AI safety and research firm—has partnered as the inaugural AI ally, offering expertise, technology, and engagement to support grantees of the NextLadder project. As stated by Elizabeth Kelly from Anthropic, the organization is committed to leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance vital services for communities in need.

NextLadder Ventures envisions a future where every individual can thrive through supported opportunities and community engagement, working to reshape the economic mobility narrative in America. The coalition takes a bold step forward in investing in practical solutions and leveraging technology to create an environment where everyone, regardless of their background, can succeed.
