Mars Launches New Online Hub to Support Pet Adoption Efforts Globally

Mars Launches Pet Adoption Resource Hub

In a remarkable initiative ahead of the upcoming 2026 Global Adoption Weekend, Mars, Incorporated has launched an innovative online platform to aid and inspire pet adoption. This new hub seeks to empower both prospective and current pet owners with essential guidance and expertise, addressing the concerns that often deter people from adopting pets.

Understanding the Adoption Barriers

Recent research conducted by Mars reveals that almost one-third of pet parents are eager to adopt but are currently held back by uncertainties about the animals' health, behavior, and compatibility with their households. This study, one of the largest of its kind, surveyed over 26,000 individuals across 14 countries, unveiling significant insights about the pet adoption landscape.

Among those surveyed, 58% of current pet owners did not adopt their pets from shelters. Interestingly, about 28% indicated a desire to adopt in the future if given the right support and information. The Mars Adoption Hub aims to remove the guesswork, offering straightforward resources to navigate each step of the adoption process with confidence.

Common Concerns for Potential Adopters

The research highlighted several recurring fears that plague potential adopters. The largest of these worries include:
  • - Medical History (33%): Many individuals fear adopting pets without a clear understanding of their medical backgrounds.
  • - Behavioral Issues (27%): The unknowns regarding a pet's behavior can make potential adopters hesitant.
  • - Household Compatibility (25%): Prospective pet owners often worry about how well a new animal might fit into their family dynamic.

Additionally, nutritional guidance emerged as an area requiring attention. A notable 71% of adopters change their pet's diet shortly after adoption, which can create confusion regarding the best diet adjustments to foster healthy digestion and successful transitions.

Expert Guidance for New Pet Owners

Veterinary experts, including Esther Bijsmans, DVM, PhD, emphasize the importance of accurate information in building confidence among potential pet adopters. She suggests that adopting a pet should be accompanied by systematic guidance throughout the initial experiences.

Pet parents are encouraged to follow the 3-3-3 rule:
  • - Days 1-3: Focus on helping the pet feel safe in the new environment.
  • - Weeks 1-3: Begin establishing routines and building trust.
  • - Months 1-3: Expect pets to adjust and settle into their new homes.

Moreover, food transitions should be carefully handled to avoid digestive issues, with gradual dietary shifts over 7 to 10 days being recommended for optimal acclimatization.

The Launch of the Mars Adoption Hub

In response to these findings, the newly established Mars Adoption Hub provides extensive expert-backed advice and necessary resources to support both pre- and post-adoption phases. By collaborating with organizations like the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, the hub aims to provide clear and actionable insights to new and seasoned pet owners alike.

When equipped with the appropriate support and knowledge, pet adoption can be a rewarding and transformative experience. Many adopters shared highlights such as witnessing their new pet grow comfortable and relaxed in their homes (43%) and feeling a sense of family integration (41%).

As Anthony Guerrieri, the Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Mars Pet Nutrition, notes, “Navigating pet adoption should be a thrilling experience, not a daunting one. Our research illustrates that while the desire to adopt is inherent, potential pet owners often feel unsure of their preparedness.”

Initiatives to Promote Global Adoption Efforts

Demonstrating a firm commitment to facilitating pet adoption, Mars will expand its 2026 Global Adoption Weekend initiative to more than 30 countries, thus increasing support for local shelters and enabling more pets to find loving homes. This expansion aims to create more impactful connections between local shelters and enthusiastic adopters.

For those considering pet adoption or seeking guidance on responsible ownership, the Mars Adoption Hub is now live. Access this vital resource to locate participating shelters for the Global Adoption Weekend and gain comprehensive support for your journey into pet ownership. Together, Mars hopes to ease the midway hurdles and encourage a brighter future for pets everywhere.
