Deeper Japan Expands Cultural Experiences in Setouchi
Deeper Japan, a travel startup based in Setagaya, Tokyo, has recently augmented its range of experiential offerings in the Setouchi region. This initiative aims to connect the creative talents of local artisans with adventurous travelers from around the world, allowing visitors to immerse themselves deeply in Japan’s rich cultural tapestry.
The company operates under Deepa Travel and has already been collaborating with skilled crafters and marine guides throughout Japan. Having previously established a strong presence in Shikoku and Hiroshima, Deeper Japan now adds an impressive 15 new products designed specifically for foreign tourists. This expansion not only caters to the demand for unique cultural experiences but also positions Setouchi as a focal point for cultural tourism with over 40 distinct experiences available.
Highlighting Traditional Craftsmanship
Cultural activities in Japan are often enriched by the age-old practices of local artisans. Setouchi’s rich heritage, particularly its famed Aji stone, often referred to as the “diamond of granite,” embodies a history that spans millions of years. This stone is prized for its durability and fine grain, attributes that even attracted renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi, who established his studio in the region. Despite its cultural significance, awareness of Aji stone outside the stone industry remains limited.
In response to decreasing demand and a reduction in local stone suppliers—from nearly 600 firms in 1993 to just around 150 today—local artisans have begun initiatives to revive interest and showcase the beauty of Aji stone through innovative product designs. One such artisan took a stand in 2021, opting to carry forward a project that had faltered due to a lack of successors. His determination reflects the sentiment that if no one else will safeguard this artisanal legacy, it falls on him to do so.
Under his leadership, the project has joined forces with designers from Switzerland and Asia to carve out a niche in the global market. Although initial resistance met this new quality-driven approach, he persevered, expanding sales opportunities by building new relationships with select retailers committed to promoting the exceptional quality of Aji stone.
New Experiences Offered by Deeper Japan
In collaboration with 15 new artisans, Deeper Japan presents a collection of hands-on cultural experiences for travelers. The highlight includes:
- - Aji Stone Crafting: This experience allows participants to visit a quarry where Aji stone is extracted. Participants select their stone, then work alongside artisans to carve and polish it into a personal bookend.
- - Traditional Hand-Kneaded Sanuki Udon: Visitors will experience making traditional Sanuki udon in a restaurant that has upheld its hand-kneading techniques for generations.
- - Tackling Big Sea Bream: Tourists can join experienced fishermen on the Setouchi Sea, aiming to catch sea bream while learning fishing traditions.
- - Kude Joinery Workshop: Here, participants create geometric designs using wooden pieces without nails, guided by a master craftsman.
- - Experiencing Zen Meditation: Visitors can learn about Zen practices in a serene temple surrounded by seasonal blooms.
In Hiroshima, experiences such as learning traditional brush-making techniques and participating in a unique tea ceremony are also on offer, highlighting the diverse cultural practices found across the region.
Embracing the Future
Deeper Japan envisions a future where such experiences not only enrich travelers' itineraries but also ensure the continuity of traditional skills that define Japan's heritage. As interest in cultural tourism increases, with predictions estimating over 42 million foreign visitors to Japan by 2025, the company is optimistic about expanding its reach. They plan to develop additional experiences in central Japan and even extend their endeavors abroad.
By establishing strong connections between artisans and curious travelers, Deeper Japan harnesses the potential for profound cultural exchange, ensuring that traditions are honored and preserved while providing visitors unique and unforgettable experiences.
