This stone is prized for its durability and fine grain, attributes that even attracted renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi, who established his studio in the region. Despite its cultural significance, awareness of Aji stone outside the stone industry remains limited.

In response to decreasing demand and a reduction in local stone suppliers—from nearly 600 firms in 1993 to just around 150 today—local artisans have begun initiatives to revive interest and showcase the beauty of Aji stone through innovative product designs. One such artisan took a stand in 2021, opting to carry forward a project that had faltered due to a lack of successors. His determination reflects the sentiment that if no one else will safeguard this artisanal legacy, it falls on him to do so.

Under his leadership, the project has joined forces with designers from Switzerland and Asia to carve out a niche in the global market. Although initial resistance met this new quality-driven approach, he persevered, expanding sales opportunities by building new relationships with select retailers committed to promoting the exceptional quality of Aji stone.

In collaboration with 15 new artisans, Deeper Japan presents a collection of hands-on cultural experiences for travelers. The highlight includes:

• - Traditional Hand-Kneaded Sanuki Udon: Visitors will experience making traditional Sanuki udon in a restaurant that has upheld its hand-kneading techniques for generations.
• - Tackling Big Sea Bream: Tourists can join experienced fishermen on the Setouchi Sea, aiming to catch sea bream while learning fishing traditions.
• - Kude Joinery Workshop: Here, participants create geometric designs using wooden pieces without nails, guided by a master craftsman.
• - Experiencing Zen Meditation: Visitors can learn about Zen practices in a serene temple surrounded by seasonal blooms.

In Hiroshima, experiences such as learning traditional brush-making techniques and participating in a unique tea ceremony are also on offer, highlighting the diverse cultural practices found across the region.
