Sinopec Unveils New 50,000-Ton Specialty PVA Production Facility in Chongqing
China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, commonly known as Sinopec, has made significant strides in the chemical manufacturing sector by launching a new specialty polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) production plant. Situated in Chongqing, the facility boasts an impressive annual production capacity of 50,000 metric tons, positioning it as the world's largest single-site high-end PVA production base.
The newly inaugurated plant is part of Sinopec’s subsidiary, Chongqing SVW Chemical Co., Ltd. It has achieved stable operations since its initial phase, producing goods that meet stringent quality specifications. The first batch of products has already been shipped to Europe, marking a pivotal achievement in Sinopec's efforts to expand its global footprint.
With this new facility, Sinopec’s total PVA production capacity has increased to 210,000 metric tons per year. This strategic enhancement is expected to strengthen the supply chain for specialized materials used across various high-value applications, including photovoltaic energy, electronics, optical films, pharmaceuticals, and more.
PVA is a versatile polymer known for its water-solubility and biodegradability. Its high-purity and transparency variants are valuable in manufacturing optical films, polarizers, and safety glass for both automobiles and high-speed trains. Furthermore, PVA finds extensive applications in textiles, construction materials, and water-soluble packaging.
SVW Chemical has developed an extensive portfolio with over 100 grades of PVA tailored for diverse performance needs and market applications. The new plant employs advanced technologies in alcoholysis and precision purification to effectively support the large-scale production of specialized PVA products.
During the construction of the facility, the project team encountered various technical challenges, notably regarding precise temperature control and consistent product quality. A novel polymerization process introduced during this phase resulted in a 40% increase in production capacity compared to older equipment models. The facility also incorporates four exhaust gas and wastewater recovery units, alongside an automated packaging system, which enhances both resource efficiency and operational performance.
The successful completion of the project within 17 months required nearly 1.98 million hours of safe work. Throughout the ramp-up, the team focused on optimizing machinery performance and process parameters to ensure stable production and uniform product quality.
SVW Chemical has over 40 years of expertise in PVA research and manufacturing. The company has expanded its product line dramatically, growing from a single grade to more than 100 today. Over 70 products are exported to more than 40 countries, establishing the company as a formidable player in international markets, especially in Europe and the United States.
Moving forward, SVW Chemical plans to leverage its enhanced production capacity and R&D resources to develop high-value specialty materials, further expand its PVA portfolio, and provide reliable supply solutions for clients worldwide.
