Urban Health Plan's New Community Psychiatry Residency Program
Urban Health Plan (UHP), one of the largest federally qualified health center networks in New York State, has announced a groundbreaking initiative to launch a Community Psychiatry Residency Program. Set to begin on July 1, 2026, this program aims to tackle the pressing mental health needs of diverse and underserved communities. This transformation in psychiatric training comes through collaborations with notable institutions like NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst and NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln.
Addressing Mental Health Needs
As New York City grapples with a significant shortage of mental health providers, the demand continues to outstrip current resources. Recognizing this gap, UHP’s new residency program is designed to prepare the next generation of psychiatrists to meet the changing landscape of mental health care. The residency will focus on providing comprehensive, culturally competent care that aligns closely with patients’ needs in communities where services are critically needed.
The partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals enables residents to gain clinical experience in hospital settings, delivering care both in inpatient units and outpatient clinics. Residents will also engage with community-based programs including crisis mobile units and home visitations, ensuring they are prepared to navigate complex health care systems and adopt a holistic approach to treatment.
A Unique Learning Environment
Paloma Izquierdo Hernández, President and CEO of Urban Health Plan, emphasized the significance of integrating psychiatric training within the community. She stated, "Health centers like Urban Health Plan play a vital role in shaping the future of health care. By embedding psychiatric training deeply within our community, we ensure that residents not only learn clinical excellence but also understand the social and cultural realities impacting our patients every day."
The residency's training model aims to develop psychiatrists who are empathetic, culturally aware, and skilled at addressing the needs of populations that are often marginalized. Through rigorous clinical training in various settings, including assisted living facilities and supportive housing, this program aspires to cultivate an environment of inclusion. Here, psycho-social emotional needs will be met with dignity and respect.
Strong Partnerships for Better Outcomes
Both NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst and NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln have expressed enthusiasm for this new program. Dr. Helen Arteaga-Landaverde from Elmhurst pointed out the necessity for more psychiatric providers and how this collaboration will help cultivate needed skills in future psychiatrists. Cristina Contreras from Lincoln echoed these sentiments, noting how this program not only trains new physicians but also serves to uplift the health and well-being of local communities through improved access to psychiatric services.
The residency program will take part in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), accepting applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Its significance is underscored by being among the few residency programs in New York City tied to a federally qualified health center, demonstrating the potential for public hospitals and community health centers to work hand in hand to fortify the psychiatric care workforce.
A Commitment to Community Service
As UHP forges ahead with this initiative, their goal remains clear: to inspire a new generation of mental health providers who see community service as the foundation of excellent care. The legacy that UHP aims to create with this residency program promises significant impacts for mental health care in areas that have long been neglected.
