Itabashi Children’s Picture Book Exhibition: A Celebration of Young Creativity

The Itabashi City is set to open the doors to a fascinating exhibition that celebrates the creativity and imagination of elementary and middle school students. The Itabashi Children’s Picture Book Exhibition will be held at the Itabashi City Central Library from March 3 to March 8, 2024, offering a unique opportunity for children and families to enjoy original picture books made by young authors.

Event Details

This exhibition is designed to spark interest in reading and illustrate the joy of storytelling among children. It will take place at the library hall of the Itabashi City Central Library, accessible every day from 9 AM to 8 PM during the event dates.

There will be a total of 82 original picture books created by students during a series of hands-on book-making workshops conducted over three days at local libraries. Among these, 67 books will be from elementary school students and 15 from middle school students, all available for attendees to browse and enjoy at their leisure.

Showcase of Translated Works

The exhibition will also highlight exceptional works from the 32nd Itabashi International Picture Book Translation Awards, featuring entries from the middle school category. Visitors will have the chance to experience the rich creativity in translation presented by these young talents, showcasing their unique perspectives and narrative styles.

Children’s Folk Song Collection Project

In collaboration with the Library of Bologna, Italy, the exhibition will introduce the Children’s Folk Song Collection Project. This initiative has been gathering traditional Japanese nursery rhymes since 2022, allowing kids to engage in fun activities while collecting and sharing these songs. Visitors can learn more about the collected songs and see highlights from the workshops involved in the project.

My Mini Library

Additionally, the exhibition will feature a project titled My Mini Library, showcasing eco-friendly bookshelves crafted by six newly designated child librarians from local elementary schools. These imaginative shelves, made from recycled materials such as milk cartons and cardboard, host a selection of books chosen by the young librarians based on their personal concepts. Each shelf serves as a mini-library, presenting a delightful array of literature for visitors to explore.

This initiative not only promotes creativity in writing and storytelling but also encourages environmental consciousness and resourcefulness among children. Each book and shelf reflects the excitement and unique voices of the participating students.
