Volt Harbor, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, announced on May 28, 2026, the successful closure of a $2 million seed funding round led by MFV Partners. This funding is aimed at the commercial rollout of their patented MAC-BESS™ technology, a modular, software-defined energy storage platform designed to tackle pressing issues in both data center energy demand and aging utility infrastructures.

Innovative Technology to Meet Modern Challenges



Volt Harbor's MAC-BESS™ platform distinguishes itself from traditional battery energy storage systems (BESS) by integrating elements of computer networking architecture. This innovation leverages software to enable real-time power flow coordination among battery modules produced by different manufacturers, thereby enhancing efficiency and reliability. The platform combines battery storage with advanced power electronics and onboard computing within a single modular system, applying six patents licensed from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Al-Thaddeus Avestruz, the President and CEO of Volt Harbor, emphasizes that integrating energy storage, power electronics, and on-board computing into a unified system presents significant advantages. Volt Harbor's storage solution is engineered to meet high reliability and performance standards typical in data centers, delivering rapid energy response in less than 100 microseconds and maintaining a failure rate equal to that found in aerospace applications. This reliability ensures that data center operations can withstand load and grid fluctuations that could cause service interruptions.

Economic and Environmental Benefits



The MAC-BESS™ system also set its sights on cost-efficiency for utility-scale applications. By utilizing second-life electric vehicle (EV) battery modules, the system can offer energy storage capabilities at one-third the cost of new battery systems. This not only provides substantial savings for commercial and industrial clients but also contributes to environmental sustainability by repurposing retired EV batteries that would otherwise be discarded.

Moreover, typical EV batteries retain approximately 80% of their functionality at the end of their automotive life, yet they are often sent straight to shredding instead of being used in telecommunication applications. Volt Harbor's approach provides lower-cost solutions for grid storage while reducing the need for new battery production and decreasing the emissions associated with peak power generation.

Collaborations and Future Prospects



Volt Harbor's innovative approach has garnered recognition, with the company being among six recipients of the 2025 DTE Energy Emerging Technology Fund. Collaborating with DTE Energy, Michigan's largest utility, they are set to deploy a MAC-BESS™ system designed to handle high-power EV charging events that exceed local grid capacity, showcasing the benefits of public-private partnerships in revolutionary energy solutions.
