About the Collection
The Osaka Prefectural 20th Century Art Collection is a compilation of approximately 7,900 artworks, including paintings, prints, sculptures, and photographs from post-war contemporary artists thriving in the Kansai region. The collection is not only displayed across various locations in the prefecture but is also accessible virtually via the
Osaka Virtual Museum. This initiative enhances opportunities for art appreciation for both citizens and visitors from Japan and abroad.
Artist Profile: Waichi Tsutaka
Born in Osaka, Waichi Tsutaka began his career as a modern poet influenced by surrealism. However, due to political pressures, he shifted to painting, studying at the Osaka Nakanoshima Western Painting Institute. His artistic journey saw a gradual evolution from figurative painting to abstract works characterized by linear forms. Notable exhibitions included participation in the
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum,
International Art Biennale in São Paulo, and many more in both America and Europe, where he became a prominent figure in abstract contemporary art. Tsutaka was recognized with several prestigious awards and held a professorship at Osaka University of Arts. Sadly, he passed away in the devastating Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995.
