AtmosClear and Microsoft Forge Historic Carbon Removal Agreement in Louisiana

AtmosClear Partners with Microsoft for Carbon Removal

On April 15, 2025, AtmosClear BR, LLC, part of the Fidelis portfolio, made headlines by signing a monumental contract with Microsoft aimed at addressing climate change through significant carbon removal initiatives. Over the next fifteen years, this partnership is poised to eliminate a staggering 6.75 million metric tons of carbon through bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS). This agreement marks a pivotal moment in the global effort to achieve permanent carbon removal solutions.

Innovative Technology and Sustainable Materials

Situated in the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, Louisiana, AtmosClear is set to develop a cutting-edge carbon capture facility. This innovative project will utilize sustainable materials, including sugarcane bagasse and forestry residues, to produce clean energy while capturing around 680,000 tons of biogenic CO2 per year. The captured carbon will either be stored permanently or repurposed beneficially as a low-carbon natural gas source or other synthetic fuels.

Scheduled to commence construction in 2026, the facility aims to begin commercial operations in 2029. The total investment for the project is estimated at over $800 million, creating approximately 75 permanent jobs along with 600 construction jobs. This venture is expected to revitalize forest management jobs adversely affected by local factory closures.

Positive Impact on the Community

Daniel J. Shapiro, CEO of Fidelis, emphasized the significance of this contract, calling it a transformative moment for high-quality carbon removal markets. He stated, "AtmosClear exemplifies how proven technologies coupled with sustainable raw materials can create substantial climate impacts while fostering quality jobs and economic development for the community. We are proud to build in Baton Rouge, where many of us at Fidelis reside, an infrastructure that not only removes carbon from the atmosphere but also offers economic opportunities to Louisiana."

Brian Marrs, Microsoft’s Senior Director of Energy and Carbon Removal, echoed Shapiro's sentiments, stating, "We are excited to partner with Fidelis on this innovative project that brings together science, engineering, and business innovation to deliver a compelling carbon removal model in the U.S. Sustainable, high-quality carbon removal solutions provided by experienced developers like Fidelis are critical for assisting Microsoft in reaching our carbon neutrality goal by 2030."
