Revamping Hotel TAU, Kumamoto: A Unique Literary Journey Awaits

Introduction
Hiraku Inc., under the leadership of CEO Takuro Someya, is thrilled to announce its major initiative in rebranding the urban book hotel "Hotel TAU, Kumamoto," which is set to open its doors on October 1, 2025. This transformation involves not only a fresh look for the establishment, previously known as Hotel Sunroute Kumamoto, but also the creation of a new literary museum called the "Natsume Purgium" on the first floor, scheduled to launch in February 2026. This exciting venture aims to celebrate the literary heritage of Natsume Soseki, a key figure in Japanese literature who once lived in this city.

Background of the Project

Hiraku’s philosophy revolves around creating spaces and opportunities that provide joyful experiences. Over the years, they have successfully managed various cultural facilities and accommodations. Notable projects include "Bunkitsuki," a bookstore that combines an entrance fee with literary experiences, and the book auberge "Hakone Honbako." Their ambition for the rebranding of Hotel TAU aligns seamlessly with the vision of transforming the establishment into a welcoming venue for culture, where residents and visitors alike can interact with both literature and the natural beauty of the region.

Key Aspects of the Rebranding

1. A Culturally Engaged Hotel

Situated on the historic grounds where Natsume Soseki once resided, the hotel aims to become a cultural hub for its guests. With the rebranding theme "Travel As Unique," the hotel seeks to create experiences that merge culture and travel. One of the most exciting features is the exclusive guest-only book library known as "TAU Library," complemented by the literary museum showcasing the personality and works of Natsume Soseki.

2. Curating a Unique Reading Experience

The TAU Library, located on the fourth floor, is meticulously curated to offer insights into Kumamoto’s cultural landscape and its people. Directed by a book curator, around 2,000 selected titles covering nine genres will be available, embodying themes such as "Walking Through Kumamoto," "Unraveling Soseki," and "Connecting with Culture." With additional selections made by the hotel staff, guests will have access to a total of approximately 5,000 captivating titles. Every design element within the hotel reflects Natsume’s literary genius, including references from his diary quoted in the hotel’s furnishings, creating an inviting and stimulating environment for a truly unique journey.

3. Introducing Natsume Purgium

Opening in February 2026, Natsume Purgium combines the words "Personality" and "Museum" to create a unique space dedicated to Natsume Soseki. This museum aims to engage guests with literature in a new and accessible way, celebrating Soseki’s life and works within the historic context of his former residence.

4. Collaboration with Local Creatives

As part of the rebranding, the hotel has undergone a complete redesign, including a new logo and website that capture the essence of Kumamoto’s cultural atmosphere. Hiraku actively collaborates with local creators, including designers and photographers from Kumamoto, to visually express the "Travel As Unique" concept, further enhancing the hotel's identity as a culturally enriching destination.
