Qaelon Medical Expands Data Advisory Board
In a significant step forward for surgical technology, Qaelon Medical has officially welcomed two new members to its Data Advisory Board (DAB). This innovative company, known for its advancements in real-time surgical leak detection and constant-flow insufflation technologies, is excited to integrate the expertise of Shanna Cotti and Robert D. Francis into its operations. With their addition, the board now comprises a diverse group including Professor David Jayne and Assistant Professor Amin Madani, who were announced just last month.
The DAB will primarily focus on two crucial areas:
1. Establishing the world's first global real-world evidence (RWE) registry specifically aimed at surgical leaks across various procedures including gastrointestinal, bariatric, thoracic, and urologic surgeries.
2. Designing an open-source, vendor-neutral data architecture that can seamlessly integrate with intraoperative technologies such as staplers, closure devices, perfusion platforms, energy devices, and imaging systems. This will pave the way for comprehensive and data-driven insights.
Eran Shlomovitz, MD, FRCPC, FRCSC, FACS, the Chief Medical Officer and Founder of Qaelon Medical, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Shanna and Rob to Qaelon's Data Advisory Board. Their deep expertise and insight will help ensure our technology is optimally deployed to save lives and reduce healthcare costs by establishing the first standardized, data-driven test methodology for surgical leak detection.”
Expertise of New Board Members
Shanna Cotti, who holds the title of Chief Digital Information Officer, brings 17 years of experience in global digital health and data strategy to the table. She commented on Qaelon's approach, saying, “Their method of constructing an open, intelligent data architecture to address one of surgery's most perilous and expensive complications exemplifies their leadership in improving patient outcomes. The focus on transparency and real-time insights resonates with my vision for digital healthcare.” Cotti’s previous work in regulated environments aimed at enhancing patient safety through actionable data will be invaluable as Qaelon seeks to empower clinicians.
Robert D. Francis, the President of Medical Professional Liability at ProAssurance Corporation, adds a seasoned perspective with over three decades of experience in the medical professional liability insurance sector. He noted, “I’ve witnessed the impact that robust clinical data systems can have on preventing complications. I am excited to assist in developing Qaelon's neutral, real-time registry for surgical leaks, which can provide essential insights to enhance patient outcomes.”
Innovative Solutions for Surgical Leak Detection
At the heart of Qaelon Medical's mission is its proprietary leak detection system—an innovative solution that enables quantifiable, EMR-exportable assessments of leaks via a constant-flow insufflator. This system delivers objective insights within just 30 seconds, providing surgeons with the information they need to address potentially life-threatening leaks in real-time, consequently mitigating the risks associated with sepsis, reoperation, or even death.
Liam Burns, CEO of Qaelon Medical, emphasized the importance of implementing contemporary solutions for surgical leakage testing, stating, “We’re elevating the standard for surgical leak testing into the digital age while broadening the intelligent operating room ecosystem.” The guidance from their newly formed Data Advisory Board is expected to aid in establishing the first Objective Performance Indicator (OPI) for surgical leaks, which would eventually support AI-powered clinical decision-making.
