Giga Mart Exhibition: A Unique Shopping Experience in Tokyo
From July 18 to August 16, 2026, the Azabudai Hills Gallery will host the intriguing ‘Giga Mart Exhibition’. This event invites participants to engage in a novel shopping sensation, where they can 'steal' products as long as they remain silent and aren't captured by the camera. This exhibition continues the innovative concept previously introduced by the team behind 'TOH-', known for its audacious and immersive experiences.
The Concept of Giga Mart
This exhibition is a new venture from the creative team behind ‘TOH-’, which revolves around a unique shopping environment where silent navigation grants visitors access to an extensive range of products. The ‘Giga Mart’ concept transforms the mundane act of shopping into a whimsical performance art, challenging visitors to navigate silently through designated areas to avoid detection.
In previous events, audiences experienced the thrill of having to stay quiet in a cramped space while attempting to obtain various exciting products within a strict time limit. With the success of its past iterations, including how the first event saw lines of over four hours, this gallery promises an exhilarating blend of art, shopping, and thrill-seeking.
What to Expect
Visitors can immerse themselves in an unconventional grocery store setup featuring three different 'theft' zones: the entrance area, the employee lounge, and the product warehouse. Within these zones, roughly 40,000 snacks, 4,000 drink options, vintage books, and even exclusive apparel await. Participants are given 60 seconds to 'steal' as many products as they can without being viewed by the surveillance cameras, turning a traditional shopping trip into an adrenaline-pumping challenge!
Event Highlights
A massive potato chip sculpture created by visual artists welcomes visitors at the entrance, showcasing collaboration from renowned artists such as ‘naka renya’ and ‘Shohei Ochiai’, among others. This serves as a visual starter for the delightful experience that lies within.
Additionally, on August 8 and 9, an exciting collaboration with the popular friend-making app ‘NEWMATCH’ will be held. This event is geared toward Generation Z, offering live performances alongside access to the Giga Mart experience, making it a comprehensive social adventure.
Exclusive branded merchandise will also be available, such as tees, stickers, and unique shopping bags that resonate with the Giga Mart theme, allowing visitors to take a piece of this unique experience home.
A Cultural Exploration
The Giga Mart Exhibition is part of a broader project titled ‘Conveni Alternative’, which aims to explore and reinterpret the concept of convenience stores in Japanese culture. By re-imagining the relationship between consumption, products, and advertising, the exhibition invites reflection on everyday consumer habits through a playful yet thought-provoking lens.
Note: This exhibition does not endorse or promote criminal behavior; instead, it aims to challenge perceptions around shopping and consumerism.
Ticket Information
Tickets are available now, with special pricing for premium access and general entry. A premium ticket grants entry to explore all three interactive zones, while regular tickets offer access to selected areas. Each experience lasts approximately one hour, creating a family-friendly environment while ensuring a consistently engaging experience for all attendees.
