Arkema Launches Innovative Bio-Based Acrylic Binders for Sustainable Textiles

Arkema Unveils ENCOR® Bio-Based Acrylic Binders for Textile Sustainability

Arkema, a frontrunner in specialty materials, recently announced the launch of its innovative ENCOR® series of bio-based waterborne dispersions. Targeted at the textile printing and finishing sectors, these dispersions stand out for their eco-friendliness, boasting up to 30% bio-based content and significant reductions in carbon emissions—up to 40% less compared to traditional textile resins.

Addressing the Industry's Carbon Footprint

The textile sector is known to be responsible for around 6 to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which raises a pressing need for sustainable solutions within the industry. As environmental awareness heightens, companies like Arkema are integral to transforming practices and reducing emissions. Helene Pernot, the Global Sustainability Marketing Director at Arkema, emphasizes that bio-based solutions are crucial for delivering sustainable textile products that align with the increasing demand for eco-friendly materials. She states, "With rising demands, we must adapt to minimize our carbon footprints in textiles."

Life Cycle Approach to Product Development

Arkema’s comprehensive approach covers the entire lifecycle of its products. The new ENCOR® binders are formulated without harmful substances such as formaldehyde and APEO, ensuring compliance with Oeko-Tex® Eco Passport standards and suitability for food contact applications. This commitment highlights Arkema’s focus on safety and environmental responsibility, which runs parallel to its innovation efforts in material science. Patricia Beurdeley, Global Market Manager for Nonwovens Textile, notes that the binders are crafted from renewable feedstocks, providing an eco-friendly alternative to conventional materials.

Moreover, Arkema is enhancing the biodegradability of these products to further promote sustainability. Improvements in durability, color stability, and wash resistance are also being prioritized, ensuring that the new binders not only minimize environmental impact but also meet the high-performance needs of textile manufacturers.

Looking Forward

As Arkema aims to become a key player in specialty materials by 2024, its initiatives reflect a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation. With a sales goal exceeding €9.5 billion in 2023 and operations in approximately 55 countries, Arkema is strategically positioned to drive significant environmental advancements across various sectors.
