Greenville Technical College Launches Cutting-Edge Facility to Boost Cybersecurity and AI Education

Greenville Technical College Enhances Workforce Preparedness in AI and Cybersecurity

The demand for skilled professionals in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity is surging, prompting educational institutions to adapt and innovate their programs. Greenville Technical College (GTC) is making strides to meet this demand with the introduction of the new Center for Applied AI and Cyber Resiliency (CAAICR). Emerging technologies are redefining the labor market, and GTC's commitment to education in these areas underscores the college's proactive approach to workforce development.

Meeting the Growing Demand

October is designated as Cybersecurity Awareness Month across the U.S., highlighting the importance of building comprehensive digital resilience. At GTC, the emphasis on cybersecurity and AI extends beyond one month of the year; it forms a core part of their academic mission. In the Upstate region, the cybersecurity job market currently shows a notable gap, with estimates indicating that only 83% of demand from employers is being met by the workforce supply. With 547 job openings available for cybersecurity positions regionally, it is clear that there is a pressing need for skilled talent in this sector.

The scenario is similar for AI professionals, where not only technology-centric roles but also positions in diverse job functions are increasingly requiring AI skill sets. Approximately 44% of technology roles such as software developers and data scientists now feature AI knowledge in their qualifications. Alarmingly, only 22% of recent graduates feel adequately equipped to meet these emerging expectations in AI.

GTC is responding to this educational gap by equipping graduates with the skills necessary to thrive in these critical fields. This initiative is reflected in their recent survey, where faculty reported a level of comfort with AI, although cybersecurity poses more of a challenge for broader adoption.

Advancements in Technology Education

To strengthen its AI education efforts, GTC has joined the National Applied AI Consortium (NAAIC) Institutional Mentorship Program. This prestigious initiative will provide strategic support as GTC seeks to integrate AI into its existing curriculum and potentially develop new degree offerings. With mentorship from faculty professionals and access to industry best practices, GTC is establishing a robust framework to advance AI learning.

Moreover, GTC has already made notable progress in AI integration through pioneering initiatives, such as the first AI welding lab in the nation and the incorporation of AI-powered software in their dental programs. These advancements are just the beginning of a transformative journey toward embedding AI within various disciplines.

The Vision for CAAICR

The upcoming Center for Applied AI and Cyber Resiliency is set to become a focal point for education and training in Greenville. Encompassing 59,315 square feet and featuring 18 specialized labs, CAAICR will accommodate over 6,600 students annually. It is designed to provide hands-on experiences that prepare students for immediate employment in fields that are rapidly evolving.

The facility will include a student-led Security Operations Center, providing essential experience in cyber defense and incident response simulations. Dr. Candice Lewis, GTC's Chief Academic Officer, emphasizes the value of practical learning experiences, stating: "Building in-demand skills through real-world monitoring and response to cyber threats will ensure that our graduates are prepared to handle the challenges faced in today’s digital landscape."

Programs within the center will extend to Computer Technology—covering networking, systems, cybersecurity, and programming—further emphasizing the connection between advanced technological training and practical application.

Bridging Educational Ventures and Industry Needs

The vision for CAAICR extends beyond just student education; it is also about enhancing corporate training capabilities within the region. By offering applied AI and cybersecurity training to the existing workforce, GTC aims to uplift the skill set of current professionals in the area, equipping them to face emerging risks and opportunities. Dr. Kelvin Byrd, GTC's Chief Economic Development Officer, remarks on this dual approach: "Integrating education and workforce development positions our regional businesses to harness AI effectively while minimizing the associated risks."

As the college continues to pave the way for innovations in education, GTC stands as a beacon for workforce preparedness in AI and cybersecurity, setting a template for community colleges nationwide and ensuring students are well-equipped for the jobs of tomorrow.
